What is an Ecosystem?

Ekosystemy są sumą wszystkich interakcji między biotycznymi, żywymi i abiotycznymi, nieożywionymi czynnikami w środowisku. Należą do jednej z dwóch ogólnych kategorii: lądowych lub wodnych.

Główne typy ekosystemów są znane jako biomy. Biomy lądowe, takie jak pustynie, lasy deszczowe i tundra, są podzielone na kategorie według dwóch głównych czynników: rocznych opadów deszczu i temperatury.

Ekosystem to interakcja między wszystkimi czynnikami abiotycznymi i biotycznymi w środowisku. Można go sklasyfikować jako lądowy i wodny. Ekosystemy lądowe są klasyfikowane na podstawie klimatu, w tym rocznej temperatury, opadów i sezonowości. Ekosystemy wodne dzielą się dalej na słodkowodne i morskie, a następnie na głębokość, która wpływa na temperaturę wody i ilość światła słonecznego wnikającego do wody.

<h4>Ekosystemy lądowe</h4>

Ekosystemy lądowe dzielą się na biomy, charakteryzujące się zarówno klimatem środowiska, jak i typami żyjących tam organizmów. Obszary w pobliżu równika ziemskiego, które charakteryzują się wysokimi sezonowymi temperaturami i dużymi ilościami rocznych opadów, to lasy deszczowe, w których występują jedne z najbardziej zróżnicowanych siedlisk na świecie. Ekosystemy o wysokich temperaturach, ale z niedoborami rocznych opadów to pustynie. Chociaż ekosystemy pustynne mają te same cechy, ich różnorodność biologiczna może się znacznie różnić.

Po drugiej stronie spektrum biom arktyczny charakteryzuje się bardzo niskimi rocznymi temperaturami i niskimi opadami deszczu. Ten ekosystem ma najmniejszą różnorodność biologiczną. Pomiędzy tymi trzema głównymi biomami znajdują się sezonowe ekosystemy tundry, łąk w strefie umiarkowanej i sawanny. Ekosystemy te wykazują oscylacyjne roczne zmiany zarówno temperatury, jak i opadów, a zwierzęta portowe i rośliny są specjalnie przystosowane do tych zmian sezonowych.

<h4>Ekosystemy słodkowodne</h4>

Ekosystemy wodne dzielą się dalej na dwie kategorie: środowiska słodkowodne i morskie. Ekosystemy słodkowodne — najrzadsze z ekosystemów zajmujących około 2% powierzchni Ziemi — obejmują jeziora, rzeki, strumienie i tereny podmokłe. Głównymi czynnikami wpływającymi na różnorodność biologiczną w tych ekosystemach są przepływ wody, temperatura i głębokość.

Płytki obszar w pobliżu brzegów stawów i jezior nazywany jest strefą litoralną. Strefa przybrzeżna jest najcieplejszym obszarem zbiornika wodnego i obejmuje wielu producentów wodnych, konsumentów i zwierzęta prowadzące zarówno lądowy, jak i wodny tryb życia. Strefa limnetyczna, czyli powierzchnia głębokiej wody, jest dobrze oświetlona i zdominowana przez plankton. Strefa głęboka, czyli głęboka woda, składa się głównie z organizmów, które zjadają martwe organizmy i nie dokonują fotosyntezy, ponieważ do głębokości przenika niewielka ilość światła.

W strumieniach i rzekach woda płynie szybko, odzyskując tlen, a także utrzymując stosunkowo chłodną wodę. Różnorodność gatunkowa jest związana z szerokością i głębokością rzeki, przy czym większe odcinki rzeki są bardziej zróżnicowane niż węższe odcinki. Wreszcie tereny podmokłe to obszary płytkiej wody stojącej, takie jak bagna, bagna i torfowiska, charakteryzujące się często gorącym i wilgotnym środowiskiem. Ekosystemy te charakteryzują się największą różnorodnością biologiczną ze wszystkich ekosystemów słodkowodnych, w tym różnorodnością roślin, zwierząt, grzybów i bakterii.

<h4>Ekosystemy morskie</h4>

Ekosystemy morskie — najczęstsze, zajmujące prawie 75% powierzchni Ziemi — różnią się od ekosystemów słodkowodnych dużym zasoleniem wody. Są one również rozdzielane na podstawie głębokości wody: płytki ocean, głęboka woda oceaniczna i głęboka powierzchnia oceanu. Najbardziej zróżnicowanym z tych ekosystemów jest płytka woda, w której występuje większość raf koralowych i związanego z nimi życia morskiego. Oprócz płytkiego oceanu na głębokiej powierzchni oceanu żyje także różnorodne życie morskie — ze względu na ilość przenikającego światła słonecznego — w tym plankton, który przeprowadza około 40% całej fotosyntezy na Ziemi.

Ze względu na minimalną ilość światła przenikającego do głębin wody, ekosystem głębin oceanicznych zawiera mniej zróżnicowany, ale często niezwykły zestaw organizmów przystosowanych do ciemności i wysokiego ciśnienia. Ten ekosystem jest również najmniej znany ze wszystkich ekosystemów ze względu na ogromną ilość przestrzeni, którą obejmuje. Jednak naukowcy są teraz w stanie zbadać tę granicę dzięki nowym technologiom, takim jak pojazd Alvin, w którym podróżują ludzie. Obecnie pojazd ten umożliwił naukowcom dostęp do 2/3 dna oceanu na głębokość do 4500 m.

<h4>Dynamika ekosystemu</h4>

Ecosystems are shaped by living and nonliving parts of an environment, and they can be grouped as terrestrial or aquatic. Terrestrial ecosystems depend on climate. Aquatic ecosystems are divided into freshwater and marine systems, and depth affects water temperature and how much sunlight reaches the water.

Terrestrial ecosystems are called biomes. A biome is defined by climate and by the organisms that live there. Near the equator, rainforests have high, aseasonal temperatures and high annual rainfall, so they support some of the most diverse habitats on Earth. Deserts also have high temperatures, but they receive too little rainfall, so their biodiversity can vary widely. At the other end, the arctic biome has very low temperatures and low rainfall, and it has the lowest biodiversity.

Between these major biomes are tundra, temperate grassland, and savanna ecosystems. These areas show yearly changes in temperature and rainfall. The plants and animals there are adapted to those seasonal shifts.

Freshwater ecosystems are the rarest ecosystems and cover about 2% of Earth’s surface. They include lakes, rivers, streams, and wetlands. Water flow, temperature, and depth shape the biodiversity in these systems.

In ponds and lakes, the littoral zone is the shallow edge. It is the warmest part of the water body and contains many producers, consumers, and animals that live both on land and in water. The limnetic zone is the deep-water surface and gets enough light for plankton. The profundal zone is deeper water, where little light reaches and organisms often feed on dead matter rather than photosynthesize.

Streams and rivers move quickly. This flow adds oxygen to the water and helps keep it cool. Biodiversity also depends on river width and depth, and larger sections are usually more diverse than narrow ones. Wetlands are shallow areas of standing water, such as marshes, swamps, and bogs. They are often hot and moist and have the highest biodiversity of the freshwater ecosystems, with many plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria.

Marine ecosystems are the most common and cover almost 75% of Earth’s surface. They differ from freshwater ecosystems because of high salinity. Marine systems are also divided by depth into shallow ocean, deep ocean surface, and deep ocean water. Shallow water is the most diverse and includes most coral reefs and their associated marine life.

The deep ocean surface still receives enough sunlight to support many organisms, including plankton. Plankton carries out around 40% of all photosynthesis on Earth. In the deep ocean, light is limited, so the ecosystem has fewer species, but many are unusual and adapted to darkness and high pressure. It is also the least known ecosystem because it covers such a large area. New tools, such as the human occupied vehicle Alvin, now let scientists explore this frontier and reach about 2/3 of the ocean floor down to 4,500 m.

All ecosystems share the movement of energy and matter through photosynthesis and feeding relationships. Solar energy enters the ecosystem and moves through living things. Matter is recycled as organisms interact and feed.
