The Carbon Cycle

W obiegu węgla atomy węgla przemieszczają się po całym ekosystemie.

Węgiel jest podstawą całej materii organicznej na Ziemi i jest poddawany recyklingowi w ekosystemie w dwóch głównych procesach: jeden, w którym węgiel jest wymieniany między żywymi organizmami, i drugi, w którym węgiel jest wymieniany przez długie okresy czasu w skamieniałych substancjach organicznych pozostałości, wietrzenie skał i aktywność wulkaniczna. Działalność człowieka, w tym wzmożenie praktyk rolniczych i spalanie paliw kopalnych, znacząco wpłynęła na równowagę naturalnego obiegu węgla.

<h4>Biologiczny cykl węgla</h4>

Wszystkie żywe istoty składają się z cząsteczek organicznych zawierających atomy pierwiastka węgla. Węgiel występuje w atmosferze w postaci gazowego dwutlenku węgla, który reaguje z wodą, tworząc wodorowęglan. Podczas fotosyntezy pierwotni producenci (lub autotrofy) przekształcają dwutlenek węgla i wodorowęglany w organiczne związki zawierające węgiel, takie jak glukoza, aby zapewnić energię do wzrostu, utrzymania i innych procesów.

Heterotrofy otrzymują węgiel organiczny do wzrostu i utrzymania poprzez spożywanie autotrofów. W procesie oddychania komórkowego te cząsteczki organiczne są rozkładane w celu uwolnienia zmagazynowanej w nich energii. Produktami ubocznymi tego procesu są woda i dwutlenek węgla, które są uwalniane do atmosfery w wyniku oddychania, kontynuując cykl.

Węgiel może również powracać do środowiska w postaci odpadów zwierzęcych lub materiału rozkładającego się z martwych organizmów. Substancje rozkładające, takie jak bakterie i grzyby, rozkładają te materiały na dwutlenek węgla i związki organiczne.

<h4>Długoterminowe cykle geologiczne</h4>

Węgiel jest przechowywany przez dłuższy czas w atmosferze, dużych zbiornikach wodnych, osadach oceanicznych, glebie, skamieniałych szczątkach zwierzęcych i we wnętrzu Ziemi. Dwutlenek węgla z atmosfery rozpuszcza się w wodzie oceanu, reaguje z cząsteczkami wody i przekształca się w węglany. W połączeniu z jonami wapnia węglany te tworzą skorupy z węglanu wapnia wielu organizmów morskich, takich jak koralowce i ostrygi. Kiedy organizmy te obumierają, ich szczątki ulegają rozkładowi i mogą opaść na dno oceanu, stopniowo stając się częścią osadu. Osad ten ostatecznie tworzy wapień, który stanowi największy zbiornik węgla na Ziemi.

Duże, długowieczne drzewa mogą również przez stulecia magazynować węgiel w swoich ciałach. Będąc pochłaniaczem (rezerwuarem węgla) na znacznie dłużej, pozostałości organizmów magazynują węgiel w postaci paliw kopalnych — takich jak węgiel, ropa naftowa i gaz ziemny—głęboko w ziemi przez miliony lat. Węgiel zmagazynowany głęboko pod powierzchnią Ziemi może powrócić na powierzchnię i do atmosfery podczas erupcji wulkanów.

<h4>Wpływ człowieka na obieg węgla</h4>

Spalanie paliw kopalnych i drewna powoduje uwalnianie znacznych ilości dwutlenku węgla do atmosfery, zmieniając globalny klimat. Ponadto wylesianie i wzmożenie praktyk rolniczych wpływają na naturalny obieg węgla, zmniejszając ilość materii organicznej w glebie, zmniejszając magazynowanie dwutlenku węgla i zwiększając poziom gazów cieplarnianych, takich jak metan, w atmosferze.

Carbon moves through living systems and Earth over short and long time scales. It is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and it cycles through ecosystems by passing between organisms and by moving through rocks, oceans, and the atmosphere. Human activities, including farming and burning fossil fuels, have changed this balance.

In the biological carbon cycle, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reacts with water to form bicarbonate. Primary producers, or autotrophs, use carbon dioxide and bicarbonate during photosynthesis to make organic compounds such as glucose. These carbon-containing molecules support growth, maintenance, and other life processes.

Heterotrophs get organic carbon by eating autotrophs. They break down these molecules during cellular respiration to release stored energy. Water and carbon dioxide are the main byproducts, and the carbon returns to the atmosphere through respiration. Carbon can also leave organisms as waste or as dead matter. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break this material down and release carbon dioxide and organic compounds back into the environment.

Carbon also moves through long-term geological storage. It can remain in the atmosphere, large water bodies, ocean sediment, soil, fossilized animal remains, and deep inside the Earth for long periods. In the ocean, dissolved carbon dioxide reacts with water and becomes carbonates. These carbonates combine with calcium ions to form calcium carbonate shells in marine organisms such as coral and oysters. When these organisms die, their remains can sink and become part of sediment, which may later form limestone, the largest carbon reservoir on Earth.

Large, long-lived trees can store carbon in their bodies for centuries. On much longer time scales, the remains of organisms become fossil fuels, including coal, petroleum, and natural gas, deep in the Earth. Carbon stored underground can return to the surface and atmosphere during volcanic eruptions. Burning fossil fuels and wood releases large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which affects global climate. Deforestation and increased agricultural practices also change the natural carbon cycle by reducing soil organic matter, lowering carbon storage, and raising greenhouse gases such as methane.
