The Nitrogen Cycle

Cykl azotowy polega na przemieszczaniu się atomów azotu między składnikami biotycznymi i abiotycznymi w ekosystemie.

Większość azotu w ekosystemie jest przechowywana w atmosferze w postaci gazu, N2. Ale tylko bakterie posiadają enzymy niezbędne do przekształcenia azotu w formę użyteczną przez inne organizmy, co nazywa się wiązaniem azotu. Dlatego azot jest bardzo ograniczonym składnikiem odżywczym w ekosystemie.

Gdy bakterie w glebie przekształcają gaz w amoniak, rośliny mogą przekształcać azot w białka, DNA i inne cząsteczki organiczne, które są spożywane przez roślinożerców i rozkładane na aminokwasy.

Można je ponownie złożyć w użyteczne białka do wzrostu i rozwoju oraz do odżywiania konsumentów. Jednocześnie roślinożercy i konsumenci zwracają część azotu z powrotem do gleby w postaci produktów odpadowych.

Zarówno martwe organizmy, jak i produkty przemiany materii zawierają azot w postaci białka, mocznika i kwasu moczowego. Rozkładające się, takie jak bakterie i grzyby, mogą rozkładać te cząsteczki, uwalniając amoniak z powrotem do gleby, który może być wchłaniany przez rośliny lub przekształcany w azotany przez bakterie nitryfikacyjne.

Azotany te mogą być również wchłaniane przez rośliny lub przy braku tlenu przekształcane w gazowy azot przez bakterie denitryfikacyjne.

Człowiek wprowadza również azot do ekosystemu poprzez stosowanie nawozów rolniczych. Jednak w przypadku stosowania w niewłaściwym czasie lub w dużych ilościach nadmiar azotu może przedostać się do ekosystemów wodnych i zwiększyć wzrost bakterii, glonów i roślin wodnych, w procesie zwanym eutrofizacją.

Atomy azotu obecne we wszystkich białkach i DNA podlegają recyklingowi pomiędzy abiotycznymi i biotycznymi składnikami ekosystemu. Jednak podstawową formą azotu na Ziemi jest azot gazowy, którego nie może wykorzystać większość zwierząt i roślin. Zatem gazowy azot musi najpierw zostać przekształcony w użyteczną formę przez bakterie wiążące azot, zanim będzie mógł przedostać się przez inne żywe organizmy. Stosowanie nawozów zawierających azot i produktów przemiany materii pochodzenia zwierzęcego w rolnictwie ma ogromny wpływ na naturalny cykl azotu.

<h4>Biologiczny cykl azotu</h4>

Około 78% powietrza, którym oddychamy, to azot. Jednak w tej formie N2 niewiele organizmów jest w stanie z niego skorzystać. Azot stanowi niezbędne cząsteczki we wszystkich organizmach, takie jak białka i DNA. Większość organizmów, nie mogąc wykorzystać atmosferycznej formy azotu, wykorzystuje produkty uboczne prokariotów wiążących azot i nitryfikujących. Wiązanie azotu przekształca gazowy azot (N2) w amoniak (NH3), podczas gdy nitryfikacja przekształca NH3 w azotyny (NO2 -) i azotany (NO3-). Rośliny mogą bezpośrednio wykorzystywać amoniak i azotany, natomiast organizmy roślinożerne pozyskują azot poprzez spożycie roślin. Kiedy te organizmy giną, bakterie w glebie są w stanie przekształcić azot organiczny w amoniak w procesie zwanym amonifikacją. Poprzez denitryfikację bakterie tlenowe mogą następnie przekształcić amoniak w azot, który jest uwalniany z powrotem do atmosfery, kończąc cykl.

<h4>Pochłaniacze azotu</h4>

Głównym zbiornikiem długoterminowego przechowywania azotu jest azot w postaci gazowej zawarty w atmosferze. Istnieją jednak inne, mniejsze pochłaniacze azotu w ekosystemie. Azot może być wiązany przez stosunkowo długi czas w bagnach, osadach morskich i skałach osadowych. Ponieważ jednak związki azotu są bardzo dobrze rozpuszczalne w wodzie, wietrzenie skał osadowych może spowodować uwolnienie azotu z powrotem do ekosystemu.

<h4>Wpływ człowieka na cykl azotu</h4>

Ponieważ azot jest często czynnikiem ograniczającym wzrost roślin w środowisku naturalnym, rolnicy dodają azot do gleby jako nawóz w celu zwiększenia plonów rolnych. Spływ zanieczyszczeń rolniczych do ekosystemów wodnych może skutkować eutrofizacją i nienaturalnie szybkim wzrostem toksycznych gatunków glonów. Hodowla dużej liczby zwierząt gospodarskich może również zwiększyć ilość odpadów azotowych w glebie i lokalnych źródłach wody.

Nitrogen in soil and living things moves through ecosystems in several forms. Nitrogen atoms are found in proteins and DNA. Most animals and plants cannot use nitrogen gas, which is the main form of nitrogen on Earth. Nitrogen must first be changed into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can move through food webs.

About 78% of the air we breathe is nitrogen gas, but few organisms can use it in that form. Nitrogen fixation changes nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonia (NH3). Nitrification then changes ammonia into nitrites (NO2-) and nitrates (NO3-). Plants can use ammonia and nitrates directly. Plant-eating organisms get nitrogen by eating plants.

When organisms die, soil bacteria break down organic nitrogen and convert it into ammonia. This process is called ammonification. Aerobic bacteria can then carry out denitrification and convert ammonia into nitrogen gas that returns to the atmosphere. That return of nitrogen gas completes the cycle.

The main long-term reservoir for nitrogen is nitrogen gas in the atmosphere. Smaller nitrogen sinks also store nitrogen for long periods. These include swamps, marine sediments, and sedimentary rock. Because nitrogen compounds dissolve easily in water, weathering of sedimentary rock can release nitrogen back into the ecosystem.

Human activity can change the nitrogen cycle. Farmers add nitrogen to soil as fertilizer because nitrogen is often a limiting factor for plant growth in natural environments. This can increase agricultural yield. However, runoff from farms can enter aquatic ecosystems and cause eutrophication, which leads to unnaturally rapid growth of toxic algae species. Large numbers of livestock can also increase the amount of nitric waste in soil and local water sources.
