The Sulfur Cycle

Jako cząsteczka gazowa, siarka krąży między atmosferą, ekosystemami lądowymi i wodnymi.

Jedna z form, dwutlenek siarki lub SO2, dostaje się do systemu ziemskiego z atmosfery, albo jako słaby kwas siarkowy rozpuszczony w opadach, albo bezpośrednio osadzony w procesie zwanym opadem.

Wietrzenie skał zawierających siarkę, powstałe w wyniku geologicznego wypiętrzania osadów oceanicznych, również przyczynia się do przedostania się siarki do ekosystemu lądowego.

Z gleby siarka dostaje się następnie do łańcucha pokarmowego przez korzenie roślin w postaci siarczanów, które są spożywane przez heterotrofy i ponownie uwalniane do atmosfery jako siarkowodór przez rozkładające się organizmy po ich śmierci.

Nadmiar siarki w glebie i z podziemnych kominów geotermalnych dostaje się do oceanu jako spływ, gdzie wytrąca się do osadów na dnie oceanu lub jest wykorzystywany jako biologiczne źródło energii przez chemoautotrofy morskie.

Aktywność wulkaniczna i kominy geotermalne również uwalniają siarkę do atmosfery w postaci gazowego siarkowodoru w naturalnym procesie. Jednak spalanie paliw kopalnych przyczynia się do nienaturalnie dużej ilości zanieczyszczeń do atmosfery, które wracają na ziemię w postaci kwaśnych deszczy, niszcząc ekosystemy.

Siarka, ważny pierwiastek w składzie chemicznym białek, podlega recyklingowi w atmosferze oraz środowisku wodnym i lądowym. Siarka występująca w atmosferze w postaci dwutlenku siarki (SO2) jest uwalniana przez rozkładające się organizmy, zwietrzałe skały, kominy geotermalne, wulkany i spalanie paliw kopalnych. Jest osadzany w ekosystemie, przechodzi przez społeczność biotyczną i albo jest uwalniany z powrotem do atmosfery w postaci gazu, albo osadzany w osadach morskich w celu długotrwałego przechowywania i ewentualnego uwolnienia z powrotem do gleby i atmosfery.

<h4>Biogeochemiczny cykl siarki</h4>

Siarka jest niezbędna dla układów biologicznych i jest składnikiem niektórych aminokwasów, takich jak cysteina, która odgrywa ważną rolę w strukturze białek. Siarka jest rozprowadzana do ekosystemów lądowych w wyniku wytrącania się słabego kwasu siarkowego, bezpośredniego opadu z atmosfery, wietrzenia skał zawierających siarkę i kominów geotermalnych.

Z gleby jest pobierany przez mikroorganizmy i rośliny i przekształcany w formy organiczne, które mogą być wykorzystywane przez konsumentów w ekosystemie. Spalanie paliw kopalnych, zwłaszcza węgla, powoduje przedostawanie się do atmosfery nienaturalnej ilości gazowego siarkowodoru, co skutkuje wyższym stężeniem dwutlenku siarki, co objawia się kwaśnymi deszczami. Kwaśne deszcze niszczą środowisko, obniżając pH jezior i rzek, szkodząc zarówno faunie wodnej, jak i lądowej.

sulfur in ecosystems and acid rain

Sulfur moves through ecosystems as part of the chemical cycle that supports life. It is an important element in proteins and in amino acids such as cysteine, which helps give proteins their structure.

On land, sulfur reaches ecosystems in several ways. Weak sulfuric acid can fall with precipitation, sulfur can drop directly from the atmosphere, rocks can weather and release sulfur, and geothermal vents can add it as well. Plants and microorganisms take sulfur up from the soil and change it into organic forms that consumers can use.

When organisms die, decomposers break down organic sulfur compounds. This process can release gases such as hydrogen sulfide, which is then oxidized in the atmosphere to form sulfur dioxide. Some chemoautotrophs also use sulfur as an energy source, so sulfur can move directly through ecosystems in that way.

Marine ecosystems also receive sulfur from runoff from land, fallout from the atmosphere, and underwater geothermal vents. Some of it moves through the food chain and returns to the atmosphere as sea spray. The rest becomes sediment on the ocean floor, where it can stay for long periods before uplift and erosion return it to land.

Human activity can change this cycle. Burning fossil fuels, especially coal, adds extra hydrogen sulfide gas to the atmosphere and raises sulfur dioxide levels. This can lead to acid rain, which lowers the pH of lakes and rivers and harms both aquatic and terrestrial animals.
