Wraz z odkryciem elektronów atomy przestały być postrzegane jako niezniszczalne i zaproponowano modele opisujące strukturę atomu.

Największym sukcesem okazał się model jądrowy Ernesta Rutherforda – oparty na jego słynnym eksperymencie ze złotą folią, w którym kierował dodatnio naładowane cząstki alfa na cienki arkusz złotej folii. Ponieważ większość cząstek alfa przeszła przez złotą folię bez odchylenia, doszedł do wniosku, że większość przestrzeni wewnątrz atomu jest pusta. Kilka z nich zostało jednak rozrzuconych pod dużymi kątami, a niewielka liczba odbiła się z powrotem, co potwierdziło, że cały ładunek dodatni i większość masy atomu znajdują się w maleńkim centralnym jądrze zwanym jądrem.

Następnie sam Rutherford odkrył protony jako dodatnio naładowane cząstki w jądrze, a James Chadwick odkrył neutrony jako elektrycznie obojętne cząstki w jądrze.

Ładunek i masa to dwie podstawowe właściwości cząstek subatomowych.

Ładunek protonu i elektronu są równe pod względem wielkości, ale przeciwne pod względem znaku. W jednostkach względnych elektronowi przypisuje się ładunek -1, a protonowi przypisuje się ładunek +1. Neutron nie ma ładunku.

Masa protonu wynosi 1,673 × 10–27 kg, podczas gdy masa elektronu wynosi 9,1 × 10–31 kg, a masa neutronu wynosi 1,675 × 10–27 kg.

Bardziej powszechną jednostką wyrażającą te ekstremalnie małe masy jest jednostka masy atomowej lub amu. 1 amu jest równa 1,66 × 10–27 kg, czyli jednej dwunastej masy atomu węgla zawierającego sześć protonów i sześć neutronów. Zatem masa protonu lub neutronu wynosi około 1 amu. Elektrony mają prawie znikomą masę 5,5 × 10–4 amu.

Pomiary stopnia ugięcia i natężenia pola magnetycznego pozwoliły Thomsonowi obliczyć stosunek ładunku do masy cząstek promienia katodowego. Wyniki tych pomiarów wykazały, że cząstki te były znacznie lżejsze od atomów. Na podstawie swoich obserwacji Thomson zaproponował, że:

Cząstka promienia katodowego Thomsona to elektron, ujemnie naładowana cząstka subatomowa o masie ponad 1000 razy mniejszej niż atom. Termin „elektron” został ukuty w 1891 roku przez irlandzkiego fizyka George’a Stoneya od „jonu elektrycznego”.


W 1909 roku Robert A. Millikan obliczył ładunek elektronu w swoich eksperymentach z kroplami oleju. Millikan stworzył mikroskopijne kropelki oleju, które można naładować elektrycznie w wyniku tarcia podczas ich powstawania lub za pomocą promieni rentgenowskich. Kropelki te początkowo opadały pod wpływem grawitacji, ale ich postęp w dół mógł zostać spowolniony lub nawet odwrócony przez pole elektryczne znajdujące się pod nimi w aparacie. Dostosowując natężenie pola elektrycznego oraz dokonując dokładnych pomiarów i odpowiednich obliczeń, Millikan był w stanie określić ładunek poszczególnych kropli na 1,6 × 10-19 C (kulomb). Millikan doszedł do wniosku, że wartość ta musi zatem stanowić ładunek podstawowy pojedynczego elektronu. Ponieważ ładunek elektronu był już znany dzięki badaniom Millikana – a stosunek ładunku do masy był już znany dzięki badaniom Thomsona (1,759 × 1011 C/kg) – masę elektronu określono na 9,107 × 10−31 kg.

<h4>Model jądrowy Rutherforda
</h4>

Naukowcy ustalili, że atom nie jest niepodzielny, jak sądził Dalton, a dzięki pracom Thomsona, Millikana i innych poznano ładunek i masę ujemnych cząstek subatomowych – elektronów. Naukowcy wiedzieli, że całkowity ładunek atomu jest neutralny. Jednakże dodatnio naładowana część atomu nie została jeszcze dobrze poznana. W 1904 roku Thomson zaproponował model atomów „puddingu śliwkowego”, który opisywał dodatnio naładowaną masę z równą ilością ładunku ujemnego w postaci osadzonych w niej elektronów, ponieważ wszystkie atomy są elektrycznie obojętne. Konkurencyjny model zaproponował w 1903 roku Hantaro Nagaoka, który postulował atom podobny do Saturna, składający się z dodatnio naładowanej kuli otoczonej halo z elektronów.


Następny ważny postęp w zrozumieniu atomu nastąpił dzięki pracy Ernesta Rutherforda. Przeprowadził on serię eksperymentów, wykorzystując wiązkę szybkich, dodatnio naładowanych cząstek alfa (α), które powstały w wyniku radioaktywnego rozpadu radu. Skierował wiązkę cząstek α na bardzo cienki kawałek złotej folii i zbadał powstałe rozproszenie cząstek α za pomocą ekranu luminescencyjnego, który przez chwilę zaświecił po uderzeniu cząstką α. Zaobserwował, że większość cząstek przechodziła przez folię bez żadnego odchylenia. Jednakże niektóre zostały nieznacznie odwrócone, a bardzo mała liczba została odbita niemal prosto z powrotem w stronę źródła.


Z tego Rutherford wywnioskował, co następuje: ponieważ większość szybko poruszających się cząstek α przeszła przez atomy złota bez odchylenia, musiały one przejść przez zasadniczo pustą przestrzeń wewnątrz atomu. Cząstki alfa są naładowane dodatnio, więc odkształcenia powstają, gdy napotkają inny ładunek dodatni (podobnie jak ładunki odpychają się). Ponieważ podobne ładunki odpychają się nawzajem, kilka dodatnio naładowanych cząstek α, które gwałtownie zmieniły ścieżkę, musiało uderzyć lub zbliżyć się do innego ciała, które również miało silnie skoncentrowany ładunek dodatni. Ponieważ odkształcenia występowały w niewielkim przedziale czasu, ładunek ten zajmował tylko niewielką ilość miejsca w złotej folii.


<h4>Analizując serię eksperymentów, Rutherford wyciągnął dwa ważne wnioski:

Analiza ta doprowadziła Rutherforda do zaproponowania modelu, w którym atom składa się z bardzo małego, dodatnio naładowanego jądra, w którym skoncentrowana jest większość masy atomu, otoczonego ujemnie naładowanymi elektronami, tak że atom jest elektrycznie obojętny. Po wielu kolejnych eksperymentach Rutherford odkrył również, że jądra innych pierwiastków zawierają jądro wodoru jako „cegiełkę” i nazwał tę bardziej podstawową cząstkę protonem, dodatnio naładowaną cząstką subatomową znajdującą się w jądrze.


<h4>Struktura atomu
</h4>
Protony znajdują się w jądrze atomu i mają ładunek dodatni. Liczba protonów jest równa liczbie atomowej w układzie okresowym i określa tożsamość pierwiastka. Neutrony znajdują się również w jądrze. Nie mają ładunku, ale mają tę samą masę co protony i w ten sposób przyczyniają się do masy atomowej atomu. Elektrony krążą wokół jądra w chmurach. Mają ładunek ujemny i znikomą masę, więc przyczyniają się do całkowitego ładunku atomu, ale nie do jego masy.


<h4>Neutrony
</h4>
Wiadomo było, że jądro zawiera prawie całą masę atomu, a liczba protonów zapewnia jedynie połowę lub mniej tej masy. Przedstawiono różne propozycje wyjaśnienia, co stanowi pozostałą masę, w tym istnienie cząstek obojętnych w jądrze. Dopiero w 1932 roku James Chadwick znalazł dowody na istnienie neutronów, nienaładowanych cząstek subatomowych o masie w przybliżeniu takiej samej jak protony.


Istnienie neutronu wyjaśnia również izotopy: różnią się masą, ponieważ mają różną liczbę neutronów, ale są chemicznie identyczne, ponieważ mają tę samą liczbę protonów.


<h4>Jednostka masy atomowej (u) i podstawowa jednostka ładunku (e)
</h4>

Jądro zawiera większość masy atomu, ponieważ protony i neutrony są znacznie cięższe od elektronów, podczas gdy elektrony zajmują prawie całą objętość atomu. Atomy – oraz tworzące je protony, neutrony i elektrony – są niezwykle małe. Przykładowo atom węgla waży niecałe 2 × 10-23 g, a elektron ma ładunek mniejszy niż 2 × 10-19 C. Przy opisywaniu właściwości drobnych obiektów, takich jak atomy, stosuje się odpowiednio małe jednostki miary, takie jak jako jednostka masy atomowej (u) i podstawowa jednostka ładunku (e). U definiuje się w odniesieniu do najpowszechniej występującego izotopu węgla, którego atomom przypisano masy dokładnie 12 u. Zatem jeden u stanowi dokładnie 1/12 masy jednego atomu węgla-12: 1 u = 1,6605 × 10-24 g. Dalton (Da) i ujednolicona jednostka masy atomowej (u) są alternatywnymi jednostkami równoważnymi amu.


Podstawowa jednostka ładunku (zwana także ładunkiem elementarnym) jest równa wielkości ładunku elektronu o e = 1,602 × 10−19 C. Proton ma masę 1,0073 amu i ładunek 1+. Neutron to nieco cięższa cząstka o masie 1,0087 amu i ładunku zerowym; jak sama nazwa wskazuje, jest neutralny. Elektron ma ładunek 1− i jest znacznie lżejszą cząstką o masie około 0,00055 amu. Dla porównania, masa jednego protonu równałaby się około 1800 elektronom. Właściwości tych podstawowych cząstek podsumowano w poniższej tabeli.

Atomic structure is built from three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Atoms make up all matter, and these particles explain an atom’s mass and charge.

The electron was first identified at the end of the 19th century by J.J. Thomson. He used a cathode ray tube, a sealed glass tube with almost all the air removed and two metal electrodes. When high voltage was applied, a visible beam called a cathode ray formed. The beam bent toward positive charge and away from negative charge. It also behaved the same way no matter which metal was used. In related experiments, a magnetic field also deflected the ray. Thomson used these results to calculate a charge-to-mass ratio and showed that the particles were much lighter than atoms. He concluded that the particles were negatively charged, smaller than atoms, and present in all atoms. That particle is now called the electron.

Robert A. Millikan later measured the charge of the electron with his oil drop experiments in 1909. He made tiny oil droplets that could gain charge from friction or X-rays. Gravity pulled the droplets downward, but an electric field could slow them or reverse their motion. From careful measurements, Millikan found a charge of 1.6 × 10−19 C for a single drop. He concluded that this was the charge of one electron. With Thomson’s charge-to-mass ratio and Millikan’s charge value, the mass of the electron was calculated to be 9.107 × 10−31 kg.

These discoveries showed that Dalton’s atom was not indivisible. Scientists also explored how positive charge is arranged in the atom. Thomson proposed the plum pudding model in 1904, where electrons were embedded in a positively charged mass. In 1903, Hantaro Nagaoka suggested a Saturn-like atom with electrons around a positive sphere. Ernest Rutherford later tested the atom with alpha particle scattering. He aimed fast, positively charged alpha particles at thin gold foil and observed them with a glowing screen. Most particles passed through without deflection. Some were turned slightly, and a very small number bounced almost straight back. Rutherford concluded that atoms contain a lot of empty space and that a small, heavy, positively charged nucleus sits at the center.

Rutherford’s model placed most of an atom’s mass in the nucleus and the electrons around it so the atom stayed neutral. He also found that nuclei of other elements contain the hydrogen nucleus as a building block and named that particle the proton. Protons have a positive charge and are found in the nucleus. The number of protons equals the atomic number on the periodic table and identifies the element. Neutrons are also in the nucleus. They have no charge but have about the same mass as protons, so they add to atomic mass. Electrons move in clouds around the nucleus. They have a negative charge and very little mass, so they affect charge more than mass.

James Chadwick provided evidence for neutrons in 1932. Neutrons are uncharged subatomic particles with a mass similar to protons. Their discovery helped explain isotopes. Isotopes have different masses because they have different numbers of neutrons, but they are chemically identical because they have the same number of protons.

Atoms are extremely small, so chemists use smaller units such as the atomic mass unit, or amu, and the fundamental unit of charge, e. The nucleus is about 100,000 times smaller in diameter than the atom, but it contains most of the mass because protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons. One amu is defined as 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom, and 1 amu equals 1.6605 × 10−24 g. The fundamental charge equals the charge of an electron, 1.602 × 10−19 C. A proton has a mass of 1.0073 amu and a charge of 1+. A neutron has a mass of 1.0087 amu and a charge of 0. An electron has a mass of about 0.00055 amu and a charge of 1−. About 1800 electrons have the mass of one proton.
