Związki chemiczne to substancje złożone z dwóch lub więcej pierwiastków w określonych proporcjach. Aby dokładnie opisać te związki, opracowano wzory chemiczne. 

Wzór chemiczny dostarcza informacji o pierwiastkach i liczbie zaangażowanych jonów lub atomów. Pierwiastki są przedstawiane za pomocą ich symbolu chemicznego, podczas gdy względna liczba jonów lub atomów jest oznaczona numerem indeksu dolnego. 

Na przykład cukier stołowy lub sacharoza to związek zawierający pierwiastki węgiel, wodór i tlen – reprezentowane za pomocą ich symboli C, H i O. Liczby 12, 22 i 11 wskazują całkowitą liczbę atomów węgla, wodoru i tlenu obecnych w związku.

Ogólnie rzecz biorąc, pierwiastki nie są wymienione w kolejności alfabetycznej, ale raczej zaczynają się od bardziej naładowanych dodatnio lub pierwiastków metalicznych, a następnie bardziej ujemnie naładowanych lub mniej metalicznych pierwiastków, takich jak wodorotlenek potasu. 

Wzory chemiczne dzielą się na molekularne, empiryczne i strukturalne.

Wzór empiryczny przedstawia najprostszy stosunek atomów obecnych pierwiastków do liczb całkowitych. W glukozie najprostszy stosunek atomów węgla, wodoru i tlenu wynosi 1:2:1 - co daje mu wzór empirycznyCH2O.

Wzór cząsteczkowy związku jest również wielokrotnością liczby całkowitej jego wzoru empirycznego. W glukozie pomnożenie jej wzoru empirycznego przez liczbę całkowitą sześć daje jej wzór cząsteczkowy.

Natomiast wzór strukturalny przedstawia relacje między poszczególnymi atomami graficznie. Symbole chemiczne przedstawiają atomy, a krótkie linie oznaczają wiązania chemiczne. Pojedyncze linie reprezentują wiązania pojedyncze, podczas gdy dwie i trzy linie charakteryzują odpowiednio wiązania podwójne i potrójne.

Rozszerzone modele wzoru strukturalnego, takie jak rysunek perspektywiczny, model kuli i kija lub model wypełniający przestrzeń, zapewniają różne trójwymiarowe perspektywy dotyczące kształtu molekularnego.

Spośród trzech wzorów chemicznych najwięcej informacji o materiale chemicznym dostarcza wzór strukturalny, a następnie wzór cząsteczkowy. Formuła empiryczna jest najmniej pouczająca.

<h4>Formuła molekularna</h4>

Wzór cząsteczkowy przedstawia cząsteczkę lub związek chemiczny za pomocą symboli chemicznych (w celu wskazania rodzajów atomów) i liczb w indeksie dolnym (w celu pokazania liczby atomów każdego typu w cząsteczce). Wzory molekularne są również używane jako skróty nazw związków.

Niektóre pierwiastki składają się z dyskretnych, pojedynczych atomów, jak gazy szlachetne: hel, neon i argon. Takie pierwiastki nazywane są gazami jednoatomowymi i mają odpowiednio wzory cząsteczkowe He, Ne i Ar. Niewiele pierwiastków istnieje w postaci cząsteczek składających się z dwóch lub więcej chemicznie związanych atomów tego samego pierwiastka. Na przykład pierwiastki takie jak wodór, tlen i azot istnieją jako cząsteczki dwuatomowe zawierające po dwa atomy, a zatem mają odpowiednio wzory cząsteczkowe H2, O2 i N2. Podobnie pierwiastki takie jak fosfor i siarka istnieją jako cząsteczki wieloatomowe o wzorach cząsteczkowych odpowiednio P4 i S8.

Należy zauważyć, że indeks dolny następujący po symbolu i liczba przed symbolem nie reprezentują tego samego; na przykład H2 i 2H reprezentują wyraźnie różne rodzaje. H2 jest wzorem cząsteczkowym; reprezentuje dwuatomową cząsteczkę wodoru, składającą się z dwóch atomów pierwiastka, które są ze sobą chemicznie związane. W wielu przypadkach wzór cząsteczkowy substancji wyprowadza się z eksperymentalnego określenia zarówno jej wzoru empirycznego, jak i masy cząsteczkowej (suma mas atomowych wszystkich atomów tworzących cząsteczkę). Można na przykład ustalić eksperymentalnie, że benzen zawiera dwa pierwiastki, węgiel (C) i wodór (H), i że na każdy atom węgla w benzenie przypada jeden atom wodoru. Zatem wzór empiryczny to CH. Eksperymentalne określenie masy cząsteczkowej wykazało, że cząsteczka benzenu zawiera sześć atomów węgla i sześć atomów wodoru, zatem wzór cząsteczkowy benzenu to C6H6.

<h4>Formuła strukturalna</h4>

Wzór strukturalny związku zawiera te same informacje, co jego wzór cząsteczkowy (rodzaje i liczba atomów w cząsteczce), ale pokazuje także, w jaki sposób atomy są połączone w cząsteczce. Innymi słowy, wzór strukturalny przedstawia graficznie strukturę molekularną związku. Pokazuje prawdopodobne rozmieszczenie atomów i sposób, w jaki atomy są połączone w rzeczywistej trójwymiarowej przestrzeni, dając więcej informacji o geometrii molekularnej. Linie służą do przedstawienia wiązań występujących pomiędzy atomami. Wzór może również przedstawiać przybliżone kąty wiązań, dając wyobrażenie o kształcie cząsteczki.

Chemical formulas show the types and proportions of atoms in a compound or molecule. They use element symbols and numbers. Some formulas also use dashes, parentheses, brackets, commas, plus signs, and minus signs.

A molecular formula shows a molecule or compound with chemical symbols and subscript numbers. The symbols tell which atoms are present, and the subscripts show how many of each atom are in the molecule. Molecular formulas can also serve as short names for compounds.

Some elements exist as separate atoms. The noble gases helium, neon, and argon are monatomic gases, so their molecular formulas are He, Ne, and Ar. Other elements form molecules with two or more bonded atoms of the same element. Hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen are diatomic and have the formulas H2, O2, and N2. Phosphorus and sulfur are polyatomic and have the formulas P4 and S8.

It is important to tell the difference between a subscript and a number in front of a symbol. H2 means one diatomic hydrogen molecule. The expression 2H means two separate hydrogen atoms. The expression 2H2 means two hydrogen molecules.

An empirical formula shows the types of atoms present and the simplest whole-number ratio of those atoms or ions in a compound. Compounds form when two or more elements chemically combine and make bonds. Water and sodium chloride are common examples of compounds. Titanium dioxide has the empirical formula TiO2, which shows titanium and oxygen and means there are twice as many oxygen atoms as titanium atoms.

In many cases, a molecular formula is found from the empirical formula and the molecular mass. Molecular mass is the sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule. Benzene is one example. Experiments show that benzene contains carbon and hydrogen in a 1:1 ratio, so its empirical formula is CH. Its molecular mass shows that one molecule contains six carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms, so its molecular formula is C6H6.

A structural formula gives the same atom count information as a molecular formula, but it also shows how the atoms are connected. It draws the molecular structure in a way that helps show the probable arrangement of atoms in three-dimensional space. Lines represent bonds between atoms. Structural formulas may also show approximate bond angles, which gives a sense of molecular shape.
