Covalent Bonding and Lewis Structures

Rozważmy cząsteczkę amoniaku. Atom azotu potrzebuje trzech dodatkowych elektronów, aby osiągnąć oktet, a atom wodoru potrzebuje elektronu, aby osiągnąć duet. 

Dlatego atom azotu wiąże się z trzema atomami wodoru, tak że zarówno azot, jak i wodór osiągają stabilne konfiguracje elektronowe. Ponieważ każde z tych wiązań ma jedną parę elektronów, nazywa się je wiązaniem pojedynczym. 

Wspólna para elektronów w wiązaniu kowalencyjnym nazywana jest parą wiążącą. Elektrony walencyjne, które nie uczestniczą w wiązaniu, nazywane są samotną parą lub elektronami niewiążącymi. 

Przy 6 elektronach walencyjnych atomy tlenu potrzebują jeszcze dwóch elektronów, aby osiągnąć oktet. Dlatego dwa atomy tlenu mają dwie pary elektronów tworzące wiązanie podwójne. Z drugiej strony  azot dzieli trzy niesparowane elektrony w swojej dwuatomowej formie, tworząc potrójne wiązanie. 

Wiązania pojedyncze i wielokrotne różnią się długością i wytrzymałością wiązania. Wiązania potrójne są krótsze niż wiązania podwójne, które są krótsze niż wiązania pojedyncze. Siła wiązania wzrasta wraz z wielokrotnością wiązania. Dlatego trudno jest zerwać potrójne wiązanie w azocie, co czyni je stosunkowo niereaktywnym. 

Model Lewisa pomaga przewidywać strukturę i stabilność cząsteczek. Zgodnie z modelem Lewisa,H2Ojest stabilną cząsteczką; Ponieważ zarówno tlen, jak i wodór osiągnęły stabilne konfiguracje elektronowe. 

Jeśli tlen dzieli elektrony tylko z jednym atomem wodoru, powstała cząsteczka OH nie jest stabilna, ponieważ tlen ma tylko 7 elektronów walencyjnych i nie może dotrzeć do oktetu. Jeśli jednak do tlenu zostanie dodany dodatkowy elektron, aby uzupełnić oktet, powstały jon wodorotlenkowy staje się stabilny z ładunkiem ujemnym. 

Wiązania kowalencyjne są kierunkowe, ponieważ wspólne elektrony łączą dwie określone pary atomów. Natomiast wiązania jonowe są bezkierunkowe i utrzymują kilka jonów w sieci. Tak więc w związku kowalencyjnym poszczególne cząsteczki są uważane za jednostki podstawowe.

W porównaniu do wiązań jonowych, które powstają w wyniku przeniesienia elektronów pomiędzy atomami metalu i niemetalu, wiązania kowalencyjne powstają w wyniku wzajemnego przyciągania się atomów w celu uzyskania „wspólnej” pary elektronów.

Wiązania kowalencyjne powstają pomiędzy dwoma atomami, gdy oba mają podobną tendencję do przyciągania elektronów do siebie (tj. gdy oba atomy mają identyczne lub dość podobne energie jonizacji i powinowactwa elektronowe).

<h4>Właściwości fizyczne związków kowalencyjnych</h4>

Związki zawierające wiązania kowalencyjne wykazują inne właściwości fizyczne niż związki jonowe. Ponieważ przyciąganie między cząsteczkami, które są elektrycznie obojętne, jest słabsze niż między jonami naładowanymi elektrycznie, związki kowalencyjne mają na ogół znacznie niższe temperatury topnienia i wrzenia niż związki jonowe. W rzeczywistości wiele związków kowalencyjnych to ciecze lub gazy w temperaturze pokojowej, a w stanie stałym są one zazwyczaj znacznie bardziej miękkie niż ciała stałe jonowe. Ponadto, podczas gdy związki jonowe są dobrymi przewodnikami prądu elektrycznego po rozpuszczeniu w wodzie, większość związków kowalencyjnych jest nierozpuszczalna w wodzie; ponieważ są elektrycznie obojętne, są słabymi przewodnikami prądu elektrycznego w każdym stanie.

<h4>Tworzenie wiązań kowalencyjnych</h4>

Atomy niemetali często tworzą wiązania kowalencyjne z innymi atomami niemetali. Na przykład cząsteczka wodoru, H2, zawiera wiązanie kowalencyjne pomiędzy dwoma atomami wodoru. Dwa oddzielne atomy wodoru o określonej energii potencjalnej zbliżają się do siebie, a ich orbitale walencyjne (1s) zaczynają się nakładać. Pojedyncze elektrony na każdym atomie wodoru oddziałują następnie z obydwoma jądrami atomowymi, zajmując przestrzeń wokół obu atomów. Silne przyciąganie każdego wspólnego elektronu do obu jąder stabilizuje układ, a energia potencjalna maleje wraz ze zmniejszaniem się odległości wiązania. Jeśli atomy w dalszym ciągu będą się do siebie zbliżać, ładunki dodatnie w obu jądrach zaczną się odpychać, a energia potencjalna wzrośnie. Długość wiązania zależy od odległości, na której osiągana jest najniższa energia potencjalna.

Należy pamiętać, że aby rozerwać wiązania chemiczne (proces endotermiczny), należy dodać energię, natomiast tworzenie wiązań chemicznych powoduje uwolnienie energii (proces egzotermiczny). W przypadku H2 wiązanie kowalencyjne jest bardzo mocne; aby rozerwać wiązania w jednym molu cząsteczek wodoru i spowodować rozdzielenie atomów, należy dodać dużą ilość energii, 436 kJ:

<h4>Struktury Lewisa</h4>

Jednak w celu uzyskania wymaganego oktetu może być konieczne współdzielenie więcej niż jednej pary elektronów przez parę atomów. Wiązanie podwójne powstaje, gdy dwie pary elektronów są wspólne dla pary atomów, na przykład między atomami węgla i tlenu w CH2O (formaldehyd) i między dwoma atomami węgla w C2H4 (etylen).

Układ okresowy można wykorzystać do przewidywania liczby elektronów walencyjnych w atomie i liczby wiązań, które zostaną utworzone, aby osiągnąć oktet. Pierwiastki z grupy 18, takie jak argon i hel, mają wypełnioną konfigurację elektronową i dlatego rzadko uczestniczą w wiązaniach chemicznych. Jednak atomy z grupy 17, takie jak brom czy jod, potrzebują tylko jednego elektronu, aby osiągnąć oktet. Stąd atomy należące do grupy 17 mogą tworzyć pojedyncze wiązanie kowalencyjne. Atomy grupy 16 potrzebują 2 elektronów, aby osiągnąć oktet; stąd mogą tworzyć dwa wiązania kowalencyjne. Podobnie węgiel należący do grupy 14 potrzebuje 4 elektronów więcej, aby osiągnąć oktet; w ten sposób węgiel może tworzyć cztery wiązania kowalencyjne.

Covalent molecules form when atoms share electrons instead of transferring them. This bonding usually happens between nonmetal atoms with similar tendencies to attract electrons. Because the atoms pull on the electrons in a shared way, the bond is held together by mutual attraction.

Covalent compounds often have physical properties that differ from ionic compounds. The attraction between neutral molecules is weaker than the attraction between charged ions. As a result, many covalent compounds have lower melting and boiling points, and some are liquids or gases at room temperature. When they are solids, they are usually softer than ionic solids. Most covalent compounds are also insoluble in water and are poor conductors of electricity in any state.

Hydrogen gas shows how a covalent bond forms. In H2, two hydrogen atoms approach each other and their 1s valence orbitals overlap. Each electron interacts with both nuclei, which lowers the potential energy and stabilizes the molecule. If the atoms move too close, the positive nuclei repel each other, and the potential energy rises. The bond length is the distance where the potential energy is lowest. Forming a bond releases energy, so it is an exothermic process. Breaking a bond requires energy, so it is endothermic. For H2, 436 kJ must be added to break one mole of molecules, and the same amount is released when one mole forms from hydrogen atoms.

Lewis structures show covalent bonding with Lewis symbols. In chlorine gas, Cl2, the two chlorine atoms share one pair of electrons. Each chlorine atom also has three lone pairs, which are pairs not used in bonding. A shared pair can be shown with a dash, so Cl—Cl represents a single bond. Each chlorine atom then has eight valence electrons around it, including lone pairs and the bonding pair.

Some atoms need more than one shared pair to reach an octet, which is a full outer shell of eight electrons. A double bond forms when two pairs of electrons are shared, as in CH2O and C2H4. A triple bond forms when three pairs are shared, as in CO and CN−. The periodic table helps predict bonding patterns from valence electrons. Group 18 elements such as argon and helium already have filled electron configurations and rarely bond. Group 17 atoms, such as bromine and iodine, usually need one electron and can form one covalent bond. Group 16 atoms need two electrons and can form two covalent bonds. Carbon in group 14 needs four more electrons, so it can form four covalent bonds.
