Types of Genetic Transfer Between Organisms

Transfer genetyczny ma miejsce, gdy informacja genetyczna jest przenoszona z jednego organizmu do drugiego. 
Istnieją dwa rodzaje transferu genetycznego: pionowy i poziomy. 
Pionowy transfer genów, najpowszechniejszy z tych dwóch, to przekazywanie informacji genetycznej z pokolenia na pokolenie. 
Pionowy transfer genów zachodzi w organizmach rozmnażających się płciowo, gdzie przekazują one potomstwu około połowy DNA, oraz w organizmach rozmnażających się bezpłciowo, które wytwarzają genetycznie identyczne potomstwo. 
I odwrotnie, horyzontalny transfer genów ma miejsce, gdy materiał genetyczny z jednego organizmu jest wprowadzany do innego organizmu z tego samego pokolenia. 
W przypadku niektórych gatunków prokariotycznych, takich jak bakterie, może dojść do poziomego transferu genów między różnymi gatunkami.

Transfer genów ma miejsce, gdy informacja genetyczna jest przekazywana z jednego organizmu na drugi. Zachodzi poprzez dwa mechanizmy: pionowy i poziomy transfer genów. Pionowy transfer genów ma miejsce, gdy informacja genetyczna jest przekazywana z pokolenia na pokolenie, co zdarza się znacznie częściej niż poziomy transfer genów. Zarówno rozmnażanie płciowe, jak i bezpłciowe są formami pionowego transferu genów, podczas których jeden lub więcej organizmów przekazuje część lub całość swojego genomu swojemu potomstwu. Genetic transfer is the movement of genetic information from one organism to another. It happens in two main ways: vertical gene transfer and horizontal gene transfer. Vertical gene transfer moves genes from one generation to the next. It is much more common than horizontal gene transfer.

Vertical gene transfer happens during both sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. In both cases, one or more organisms pass some or all of their genome to their offspring. This kind of transfer occurs in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic species. It explains how traits are passed down through generations.

Horizontal gene transfer moves genetic information to a member of the same generation. It happens most often in prokaryotic species. In eukaryotes, transfer between different species is very rare, but in prokaryotes it occurs frequently. This makes horizontal gene transfer an important source of genetic diversity among prokaryotes.

Most prokaryotic species reproduce asexually. This helps them make offspring quickly, but the offspring have limited genetic diversity. Horizontal gene transfer helps add new genetic variation. Scientists think that horizontal gene transfer and mutation are two of the biggest sources of genetic variation in prokaryotes, and this variation provides raw material for natural selection.

A clear example is antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Genes that give resistance to an antibiotic can move between different species and strains of bacteria. This can give the receiving bacteria a selective advantage. Penicillin-resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes gonorrhea, are one example. Over millions of years, some estimates suggest that at least 18% of the E. coli genome was acquired through horizontal gene transfer.
