What is Organic Chemistry?

Chemia organiczna to nauka o związkach chemicznych składających się głównie z atomów węgla związanych z atomami wodoru, tlenu, azotu lub siarki.
Związki organiczne tworzą ogromną różnorodność cząsteczek - od podstawowych elementów budulcowych życia, takich jak DNA lub ściany komórkowe roślin, po materiały uwalniające energię, takie jak paliwa. Zwykle łatwo je rozbić.
Atomy węgla stanowią szkielet każdego związku organicznego, który może przybierać różnorodne struktury z układami pierścieniowymi, rozgałęzionymi i o prostych łańcuchach ze względu na wszechstronność węgla w tworzeniu czterech wiązań jako wiązań pojedynczych, podwójnych lub potrójnych. 
Związki organiczne mogą być węglowodorami lub węglowodorami funkcjonalizowanymi.
Węglowodory składają się wyłącznie z atomów węgla i wodoru. Alkany to węglowodory zawierające wiązania pojedyncze. Alkeny zawierają jedno lub więcej wiązań podwójnych, podczas gdy alkiny zawierają jedno lub więcej wiązań potrójnych.
Węglowodory, w których co najmniej jeden atom wodoru jest podstawiony przez określoną grupę atomów lub grupy funkcyjne, nazywane są "węglowodorami funkcjonalizowanymi". Ogólny wzór węglowodorów funkcjonalizowanych oznacza część węglowodorów literą "R", po której następuje właściwa grupa funkcyjna.

Chemia organiczna to nauka o związkach węgla zwanych związkami organicznymi. Związki organiczne pochodzą z organizmów żywych lub są syntetyzowane przez chemików. Cechą charakterystyczną tych związków jest obecność węgla jako głównego pierwiastka, który jest związany z innymi atomami węgla i innymi pierwiastkami, takimi jak wodór, tlen, azot i siarka. Istnienie szerokiej gamy cząsteczek organicznych jest konsekwencją zdolności atomów węgla do tworzenia do czterech silnych wiązań z innymi atomami węgla, w wyniku czego powstają łańcuchy i pierścienie o wielu różnych rozmiarach, kształtach i złożoności. Jednakże niektóre związki zawierające węgiel, takie jak węglany, cyjanki i proste tlenki (CO i CO_2), nie są zazwyczaj klasyfikowane jako związki organiczne.

Związki organiczne są kluczowymi składnikami tworzyw sztucznych, mydeł, perfum, słodzików, tkanin, farmaceutyków i wielu innych substancji używanych codziennie. Dlatego badanie ich struktury i reakcji ma kluczowe znaczenie dla zrozumienia ich funkcji w prawdziwym życiu.

Organic chemistry focuses on carbon compounds called organic compounds. These compounds may come from living things or be made by chemists. Carbon is the main element in them, and it bonds with other carbon atoms as well as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur.

Carbon can form up to four strong bonds. That ability lets carbon atoms build chains and rings of many sizes, shapes, and levels of complexity. Not every carbon-containing substance is classified as organic. Carbonates, cyanides, and simple oxides such as CO and CO2 are usually excluded.

The simplest organic compounds are hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen. They can be alkanes with single bonds, alkenes with one or more double bonds, or alkynes with one or more triple bonds.

Hydrocarbons can vary a lot even though they use only two kinds of atoms. Their carbon atoms may form straight chains, branched chains, rings, or combinations of these structures. As the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms changes, properties such as melting point and boiling point usually change in a predictable way.

Adding a functional group creates a new family of compounds called functionalized hydrocarbons. A functional group is a specific atom or group of atoms that mostly controls the properties of the molecule. For example, compounds with an –OH group attached to the hydrocarbon part are alcohols. By convention, alcohols have the general formula R–OH, where R is the hydrocarbon portion.

Compounds with the same functional group belong to the same family. Organic compounds are important in plastics, soaps, perfumes, sweeteners, fabrics, pharmaceuticals, and many other everyday products. Learning their structures and reactions helps explain how these materials work in real life.
