Multiple Allele Traits

W przypadku tego samego genu wiele alleli może wchodzić w interakcje, wpływając na fenotypy, takie jak kształt i skład białka poszczególnych komórek.

Allelizm wielokrotny opisuje geny, które występują w trzech lub większej liczbie form allelicznych. Chociaż organizmy diploidalne, podobnie jak ludzie, zwykle posiadają tylko dwa allele każdego genu, w populacji występuje wiele alleli wielu (jeśli nie większości) ludzkich genów. Jednakże heterozygoty, które mają jeden allel prawidłowy i jeden allel sierpowatokrwinkowy, wytwarzają zarówno normalne (w kształcie krążka), jak i sierpowate czerwone krwinki i mówi się, że posiadają cechę sierpowatokrwinkową. Osoby te rzadko cierpią na powikłania choroby, chyba że na przykład napotkają niski poziom tlenu. Jest to przykład niepełnej dominacji, ponieważ heterozygota wykazuje fenotyp pośredni pomiędzy komórkami zdrowymi i sierpowatymi.
