X-inactivation

W organizmach, które posiadają wiele kopii tego samego chromosomu, takich jak samice, które mają dwa chromosomy X, proces kompensacji genetycznej musi zachodzić we wczesnym okresie rozwoju. Inaktywacja chromosomu X odpowiada za pojawienie się samic kotów szylkretowych i perkalowych. Koty te są heterozygotyczne pod względem genu z allelami odpowiedzialnymi za futro czarne i pomarańczowe zlokalizowane na chromosomie X. Ich cętkowana sierść wynika z losowej inaktywacji alleli czarnego i pomarańczowego futra w grupach komórek (koty perkalowe mają również białe plamy na futrze, które są spowodowane przez inny chromosom). Chociaż istnieją samce kotów szylkretowych i perkalowych, mają one dodatkowy chromosom X i są na ogół bezpłodne.

Inaktywacja X zmniejsza nasilenie schorzeń spowodowanych przez dodatkowe chromosomy X. Mężczyźni z zespołem Klinefeltera tworzą ciałka Barra, aby dezaktywować dodatkowy chromosom X. Kobiety z zespołem potrójnego X tworzą dodatkowe ciałka Barra w związku z nadmiarem chromosomu lub chromosomów X.
