Michael addition uses enolate donors to build new carbon-carbon bonds in conjugate addition reactions. In this reaction, a nucleophile attacks the beta carbon of an alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyl compound. The beta carbon is part of the conjugated system and serves as the electrophile, or Michael acceptor.

The donors in a Michael addition are active methylene compounds. These include beta-diketones, beta-keto esters, beta-keto nitriles, and alpha-nitro ketones. A base starts the reaction by removing an acidic methylene hydrogen. This forms a doubly stabilized enolate ion, which acts as the Michael donor.

The base used depends on the electron-withdrawing group in the nucleophile and on its strength. The enolate then attacks the beta carbon of the conjugated system. These acceptor molecules contain double bonds conjugated with carbonyl, cyano, or nitro groups. The attack creates a new C-C bond and produces another enolate ion.

The final step is protonation of that enolate ion. The solvent or the starting substrate can provide the proton. This gives the Michael-addition product.
