Pomimo tych skrajności, bakterie i archeony mają na ogół około 3000 genów w swoich genomach. Ponieważ prokariota prawie nie mają sekwencji niekodujących, oznacza to, że ich genomy mogą być stosunkowo małe w porównaniu z genomami eukariontów. Mniejsze genomy oznaczają również mniej do replikacji w każdej rundzie podziału komórki - co ma sens logistyczny dla szybkiej reprodukcji.
Eukarionty zazwyczaj mają około 20 000 genów, ale ich genomy są przerywane długimi odcinkami sekwencji niekodujących - co oznacza, że ich rozmiar genomu niekoniecznie przekłada się na złożoność. 
Genom Paris japonica może być ponad pięćdziesiąt razy większy od genomu ludzkiego – ale jest to przynajmniej częściowo spowodowane ogromną ilością sekwencji niekodujących i prawdopodobnie wysokim poziomem duplikacji – niekoniecznie bardziej nowatorskimi genami.
Jak więc organizmy ewoluują nowe geny? Odpowiedzią jest zazwyczaj modyfikacja sekwencji, która już istnieje.
Jednym z głównych źródeł ewolucji nowych genów jest duplikacja genów. Wyobraźmy sobie, że fragment DNA zawierający gen zostaje przypadkowo zduplikowany. Teraz organizm ma drugą kopię istniejącego genu. 
Takie nowe kopie genów są wolne od ograniczeń nałożonych na oryginał w celu utrzymania funkcji, a więc mogą się rozchodzić - potencjalnie ewoluując nową rolę lub zmodyfikowaną funkcję oryginału. 
Innym sposobem tworzenia nowych genów jest tasowanie DNA - gdzie segmenty istniejącego genu lub kopii genu są oddzielane i przenoszone, aby dołączyć do segmentów innego genu - tworząc gen hybrydowy, który może przejąć nową funkcję.
Mutacja wewnątrzgenowa - zmiany w sekwencji genów wprowadzone przez mutacje w czasie, odpowiadają za wiele "nowych" genów. Ta rozbieżność jest najbardziej zauważalna, gdy porównuje się gatunki lub linie, które same rozchodzą się niezależnie. Gdy ta rozbieżność przekroczy pewien punkt lub jeden gen zacznie pełnić nową funkcję, można je sklasyfikować jako zupełnie inne geny.
Wreszcie, horyzontalny transfer genów wprowadza do genomu nowe geny i sekwencje ze źródeł zewnętrznych - takich jak inne osobniki, a nawet inne gatunki. Przeciętny eukariont ma ich około 20 000. Jednak wielkość genomu, zwłaszcza u eukariontów, jest niezwykle zmienna – w dużej mierze ze względu na ilość sekwencji niekodujących. Tworzenie nowych genów Aby wyewoluować nowe geny, organizmy mają kilka głównych opcji. Wspólną cechą większości z nich jest to, że modyfikują sekwencje, które już istnieją. Podczas duplikacji genu duplikowana jest część DNA zawierająca gen. Ta druga kopia nie podlega presji selekcyjnej, która ogranicza pierwszą, i dlatego może się różnić. Z czasem może to prowadzić do ewolucji nowych genów o nowych rolach. Inny rodzaj duplikacji – tasowanie DNA – może spowodować, że tylko część genu zostanie zduplikowana i połączy się z innym genem. Może to skutkować powstaniem nowych genów i nowych produktów. Czasami nowe geny po prostu ewoluują w wyniku nagromadzonych mutacji w czasie. Nazywa się to mutacją wewnątrzgenową i jest najbardziej zauważalna podczas porównywania różnych gatunków lub rozbieżnych populacji. Wreszcie możliwe jest także pozyskanie nowych genów ze źródeł zewnętrznych w procesie zwanym poziomym transferem genów. Oznacza to, że materiał genetyczny może pochodzić od innych osobników, czasami tego samego gatunku, ale potencjalnie także całkowicie innego gatunku. Jest to częste źródło nowych genów u prokariotów i archeonów. Występuje rzadziej u eukariontów, ale wykazano, że występuje, a eukarionty mogą nawet pobierać informację genetyczną ze źródeł tak odległych, jak bakterie czy grzyby.

Genome size and gene evolution are linked through changes in DNA sequence and genome structure. Some genes can arise from parts of the genome that were not coding before, while others come from changes to existing genes. These shifts help explain how new genetic material can appear over time.

A genome is the full set of DNA in an organism. Its size can change as DNA is added, removed, or rearranged. The transcript highlights that genome size is not fixed, and that these changes can shape the evolution of new genes.

New genes may form by duplication and later change, or by other alterations in noncoding DNA. Over time, these changes can give rise to new functions. This process helps connect genome structure with the emergence of genetic novelty.
