Pierwsze prawo Newtona stwierdza, że ​​wypadkowa siła zewnętrzna powoduje zmianę ruchu. Na obiekt lub system działają siły zewnętrzne, pochodzące spoza obiektu lub układu. Natomiast siły wewnętrzne powstają wewnątrz układu będącego przedmiotem zainteresowania i nie prowadzą do żadnego przyspieszenia. Z drugiej strony, siły wewnętrzne obejmują siłę grawitacji, siłę magnetyczną, siłę elektryczną i siłę sprężyny.

Wyobraźmy sobie dwóch uczniów pchających unieruchomiony samochód z kierowcą w środku. Systemem zainteresowania jest samochód z osobą w środku. Siła wywierana przez dwóch uczniów jest siłą zewnętrzną. Przyspieszenie byłoby wówczas wprost proporcjonalne i miałoby ten sam kierunek co wypadkowa siła zewnętrzna działająca na układ.

External forces and motion changes are linked in Newton’s first law. A net external force causes a change in motion. External forces act on an object or system from outside that object or system.

Internal forces come from inside the system of interest. They act on one part of an object and are exerted by another part of the same object. These forces do not cause acceleration when the whole system is studied.

When analyzing motion, the internal forces are ignored. Instead, only the external forces that produce acceleration are considered. Common external forces include applied force, normal force, tension force, friction force, and air resistance force.

Other forces are treated as internal forces in this model. These include gravitational force, magnetic force, electric force, and spring force. A stalled car with a driver inside shows the difference clearly. If two students push the car, their push is an external force on the car-and-driver system. The force the driver uses to hold the steering wheel is an internal force between parts of that system.

Different forces acting on the same mass can produce different accelerations. Friction acts on the car and opposes its motion. A larger net external force gives a larger acceleration. The acceleration is directly proportional to the net external force and points in the same direction.
