Propagation of Waves

Wielkość współczynnika załamania światła porównuje prędkość fal elektromagnetycznych w różnych ośrodkach. Wyraża się ją jako stosunek prędkości światła w próżni do prędkości światła w danym ośrodku.
Jeśli fala przemieszcza się od gęstszego ośrodka do rzadszego ośrodka, fale odbite i transmitowane są w fazie z falą padającą, ale ich amplituda ulega zmniejszeniu.
Natomiast jeśli laser zostanie umieszczony po drugiej stronie, fala rozchodzi się od rzadszego do gęstszego ośrodka. W takim przypadku fala odbita jest przesunięta w fazie o 180° w stosunku do fali padającej. Transmitowana fala pozostaje w fazie z falą padającą.

Kiedy fala rozchodzi się z jednego ośrodka do drugiego, jej część może zostać odbita w pierwszym ośrodku, a część może zostać przeniesiona do drugiego ośrodka. W takim przypadku interfejs obu mediów można uznać za granicę, która nie jest ani stała, ani swobodna.

Rozważmy scenariusz, w którym fala rozchodzi się od struny o małej liniowej gęstości masy do struny o dużej liniowej gęstości masy. W takim przypadku fala odbita jest przesunięta w fazie w stosunku do fali padającej, natomiast fala transmitowana jest w fazie w stosunku do fali padającej. Wave reflection and transmission happen when a wave moves from one medium to another. At the boundary, part of the wave can bounce back into the first medium, and part can pass into the second medium. The interface between the two media then acts like a boundary that is neither fixed nor free.

The wave behavior depends on the change in linear mass density of the strings. When a wave travels from a string with low linear mass density to a string with high linear mass density, the reflected wave is out of phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave stays in phase with the incident wave. In this case, both reflected and transmitted waves have smaller amplitudes than the incoming wave.

If the tension in both strings is the same, the wave speed is lower in the string with higher linear mass density. The opposite change gives a different phase result. When a wave moves from a string with high linear mass density to a string with low linear mass density, the reflected wave is in phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave is also in phase, and both waves again have amplitudes smaller than the incident wave.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions. A simplified surface water wave is a good example. The water moves up and down, while the wave disturbance travels horizontally through the medium.
