Weźmy pod uwagę parowanie zachodzące w zamkniętym ekosystemie. Ponieważ para wodna nie wydostaje się z pojemnika, jej objętość pozostaje stała, a proces jest izochoryczny.
Przy stałej głośności system nie wykonuje żadnej pracy. Teraz, stosując pierwszą zasadę termodynamiki, ciepło dodane do układu równa się zmianie energii wewnętrznej.
Na schemacie pV proces ten jest reprezentowany przez pionową linię równoległą do osi nacisku.
Proces termodynamiczny zachodzący przy stałym ciśnieniu jest procesem izobarycznym. Kiedy woda paruje z rzeki, para wodna ucieka. Jednak ciśnienie atmosferyczne w układzie pozostaje stałe, a zatem proces ten jest izobaryczny.
W tym przypadku wykonana praca równa się iloczynowi zmiany ciśnienia i objętości. Dlatego ciepło dodawane do systemu jest wykorzystywane do zwiększenia energii wewnętrznej systemu i wykonania pracy.
Wykres pV dla procesu izobarycznego jest poziomą linią równoległą do osi objętości.

Proces termodynamiczny zachodzący przy stałej objętości nazywa się procesem izochorycznym. Zgodnie z pierwszą zasadą termodynamiki ciepło dostarczone lub odprowadzone z układu jest częściowo wykorzystywane do wykonania pracy i zmiany energii wewnętrznej układu. Jednakże w procesie izochorycznym objętość pozostaje stała. Zatem praca wykonana przez układ wynosi zero. Dlatego wymiana ciepła zmienia jedynie energię wewnętrzną układu.

Załóżmy, że 1 000 g wody ogrzewa się od 40 stopni Celsjusza do 70 stopni Celsjusza przy stałej objętości. Ponieważ proces jest izochoryczny, praca wykonana przez układ wynosi zero. Ciepło dodane do układu jest iloczynem masy, zmiany temperatury i ciepła właściwego wody. Ponieważ zmiana temperatury wynosi 30 K, a ciepło właściwe wody wynosi 4184 J/kg.K, ciepło dodane do układu szacuje się na 125,52 kJ.

Proces termodynamiczny zachodzący pod stałym ciśnieniem nazywany jest procesem izobarycznym. Jeśli jednak wielkość systemu się kurczy, praca jest wykonywana w systemie i jest ujemna.

Zagotowanie wody w parę w otwartym pojemniku jest przykładem procesu izobarycznego, w którym ciśnienie atmosferyczne pozostaje stałe.

Thermodynamic processes can happen at constant volume or at constant pressure. An isochoric process is a constant-volume process. In this case, the volume does not change, so the work done by the system is zero. The first law of thermodynamics still applies, so any heat added or removed changes the internal energy of the system only.

A simple example is heating 1000 g of water from 40 degrees celsius to 70 degrees celsius at constant volume. Because the process is isochoric, no work is done by the system. The heat added is found from mass, temperature change, and the specific heat of water. With a 30 K temperature change and a specific heat of 4184 J/kg.K, the heat added is estimated to be 125.52 kJ.

An isobaric process is a constant-pressure process. Here, the heat added to the system is used both to increase internal energy and to do work. The work done in this process equals pressure times the change in volume. If the volume expands, the system does positive work on the surroundings. If the volume contracts, work is done on the system and the work is negative.

Boiling water into steam in an open container is an example of an isobaric process because atmospheric pressure stays constant. On a pV diagram, an isochoric process appears as a straight line parallel to the pressure axis. An isobaric process appears as a straight line parallel to the volume axis.
