Transkrypcja to proces syntezy RNA z matrycy DNA.
Na matrycowym DNA kompleks transkrypcji przed inicjacją gromadzi się wokół głównego promotora genu. Promotor zawiera pudełko TATA i sekwencję inicjującą. Ogólne czynniki transkrypcyjne wiążą się w pudełku TATA, podczas gdy sekwencja inicjująca zawiera miejsce rozpoczęcia transkrypcji.
