Characteristics of Dry Friction

Tarcie suche występuje, gdy dwie twarde powierzchnie ślizgają się względem siebie bez żadnego smarowania lub płynu. Powoduje ono opór podczas przesuwania przedmiotów po powierzchni, na przykład gdy ogrodnik popycha taczki. Siła wywierana do poruszania wózka powoduje tarcie suche między kołem a ziemią.

Przed rozpoczęciem ruchu taczki, siła tarcia statycznego działa stycznie do powierzchni kontaktu, przeciwdziałając sile, która ma wywołać ruch. Ta siła tarcia zapobiega poślizgowi taczki i pomaga utrzymać stabilność. Ważne jest zauważenie, że siła tarcia statycznego jest obecna tylko wtedy, gdy nie ma względnego ruchu między dwiema powierzchniami.

Oznacza to, że nawet jeśli obszar kontaktu między kołem a ziemią się zmienia, siła tarcia statycznego pozostaje stała, pod warunkiem że ciśnienie normalne pozostaje w tym konkretnym zakresie.

Gdy taczka zaczyna ślizgać się i zachodzi ruch, wówczas pojawia się siła tarcia kinetycznego. Ta siła jest również proporcjonalna do siły normalnej, ale zazwyczaj jest mniejsza od maksymalnej siły tarcia statycznego. Dry friction is the resistance between two solid surfaces that move against each other without lubrication or any fluid. A common example is a gardener pushing a wheelbarrow across the ground. The wheel and the ground create dry friction that slows the motion.

Before the wheelbarrow starts to move, static friction acts at the contact surface. Static friction is the force that opposes motion before slipping begins, and it helps keep the wheelbarrow stable. It is present only when there is no relative motion between the two surfaces.

As the wheelbarrow is about to slip, the maximum static friction depends on the normal force. The normal force is the push that surfaces exert on each other at the contact point. This maximum static friction is described by the coefficient of static friction, which depends on the materials in contact and on how rough their surfaces are.

Static friction also does not depend on contact area when the normal pressure stays within a range that avoids deformation or damage. So, even if the wheel and the ground touch over a larger or smaller area, the static friction can stay the same under those conditions. Once the wheelbarrow begins to slide, kinetic friction takes over.

Kinetic friction is the friction force during motion. It is also proportional to the normal force, but it is usually smaller than the maximum static friction. At very low speed, however, kinetic friction can become nearly equal to the maximum static friction because the surfaces have more time to interact.

The coefficient of kinetic friction mainly depends on surface properties and the surrounding environment. Temperature, humidity, and surface contamination can change its value. Knowing how static and kinetic friction respond to material type, surface roughness, and environmental conditions helps in choosing the right materials for different uses.
