Types of Friction Problems

Tarcie jest istotnym pojęciem w fizyce, inżynierii i codziennym życiu. Jest to siła, która przeciwdziała względnemu ruchowi lub tendencji takiego ruchu między dwiema powierzchniami w kontakcie. Jednym z najczęstszych rodzajów tarcia napotkanego w różnych zastosowaniach jest tarcie suche. Problemy związane z suchym tarciem można szeroko podzielić na trzy typy, z każdym z nich wiążą się unikalne cechy i wyzwania.

Te nieznane można obliczyć, korzystając z trzech równań równowagi, które rządzą układem. Gdy wartości tych nieznanych zostaną ustalone, można obliczyć wytworzoną siłę tarcia, co pozwala zrozumieć czynniki wpływające na stabilność skrzyni.

Drugi typ problemu związany z suchym tarciem dotyczy sytuacji, w których nadchodzący ruch występuje we wszystkich punktach kontaktu. Przykładem takiego problemu jest drabina postawiona na gładkim murze. Aby rozwiązać ten problem, należy najpierw zidentyfikować cztery nieznane: siły normalne w obu punktach kontaktu, siłę tarcia u podstawy drabiny i kąt. Te nieznane można obliczyć, korzystając z trzech równań równowagi oraz jednego równania tarcia statycznego, które dotyczy punktów kontaktu. Po obliczeniu wartości można ocenić najmniejszy kąt, pod którym drabina może być umieszczona bez poślizgu.

Trzeci typ problemu związany z suchym tarciem dotyczy sytuacji, w których nadchodzący ruch występuje w niektórych, ale nie we wszystkich punktach kontaktu. Przykładem tego typu problemu jest dwu-elementowa ramka poddana działaniu nieznanej siły poziomej. W tym przypadku rama może mieć tendencję do poślizgu na jednym końcu, podczas gdy pozostaje nieruchoma na drugim końcu.

Aby rozwiązać ten problem, należy zidentyfikować nieznane: siły normalne w obu punktach kontaktu, siły tarcia na obu końcach, siłę poziomą i siły reakcji na podporach. Do wyznaczenia tych nieznanych można użyć sześciu równań równowagi i jednego z dwóch możliwych równań tarcia statycznego. Rozwiązanie tych równań pozwala określić siłę poziomą wymaganą do spowodowania ruchu w ramie.

W miarę zwiększania siły przyłożonej do ramy mogą wystąpić dwie możliwości: poślizg na lewym końcu, podczas gdy prawy końcu pozostaje nieruchomy lub odwrotnie. Analizując te możliwości można lepiej zrozumieć czynniki wpływające na ruch ramy i warunki, w których zajdzie poślizg.

Dry friction problems often focus on crates, ladders, and frames that are close to slipping. Dry friction is the force that resists relative motion, or the tendency for motion, between two surfaces in contact. In many physics and engineering problems, this force helps keep an object still or defines the point where motion is about to begin.

One common case has no clear impending motion. A force may be applied to a crate, but the crate stays at rest. The friction force between the floor and the crate opposes the applied force and keeps the crate stationary. To solve this kind of problem, the normal force, the friction force, and the applied force are the three unknowns. They can be found using the three equilibrium equations for the system.

A second type of problem reaches impending motion at every contact point. A ladder against a smooth wall is a good example. The ladder is just about to slip, and the goal is to find the smallest angle that still keeps it from sliding. This setup has four unknowns: the normal forces at both contact points, the friction force at the base, and the angle. The three equilibrium equations and one static friction equation are used to solve for these values.

A third type involves impending motion at some contact points, but not at others. A two-member frame with an unknown horizontal force is one example. The frame may slip at one end while the other end remains stationary. This case has seven unknowns, including the normal forces, the friction forces at both ends, the applied horizontal force, and the reaction forces at the supports. Six equilibrium equations and one of the two possible static friction equations are used to determine the force needed to start movement. As the applied force increases, the frame may slip on the left while the right side stays fixed, or the reverse may happen.
