Pobieranie próbek to proces wybierania niewielkiej porcji z materiału sypkiego do analizy. Próbka to wybrana porcja reprezentująca materiał sypki lub populację.
Materiał może być różnego rodzaju - stały, ciekły lub gazowy, którego skład może być jednorodny lub niejednorodny.
W przypadku materiału jednorodnego do analizy wystarczy pobrać pojedynczą próbkę, zwaną próbką pobraną.
Jednak w przypadku materiału niejednorodnego z różnych części materiału sypkiego wybiera się kilka próbek pierwotnych i łączy je w celu analizy. Jest to tak zwana próbka brutto.
Jednorodny podzbiór próbki brutto nadający się do analizy laboratoryjnej nazywany jest próbką laboratoryjną. Część próbki laboratoryjnej, która jest analizowana, jest określana jako próbka analityczna.
Różne metody pobierania próbek to losowe, oceniające, systematyczne, stratyfikowane i grupowe.
