Tranzystor polowy metalowo-tlenkowo-półprzewodnikowy (MOSFET) to urządzenie półprzewodnikowe z trzema zaciskami: źródłem, drenem i bramką, znane również jako IGFET, MISFET i MOST.
Może to być kanał n lub p, w zależności od domieszkowania substratu i regionów źródłowych lub drenażowych.
W n-kanałowym tranzystorze MOSFET podłoże ma dwa silnie domieszkowane obszary źródła i drenu typu n. Na powierzchni wyrasta cienka warstwa dwutlenku krzemu, a na wierzchu osadza się metal, tworząc elektrodę bramkową.
Przy zerowym napięciu bramki żaden prąd nie przepływa ze źródła do drenu, z wyjątkiem niewielkiego prądu upływu.

Jednakże zastosowanie dodatniego polaryzacji bramki N-MOSFET tworzy kanał n, ułatwiający przepływ dużego prądu. Przewodność tego kanału można regulować poprzez zmianę napięcia bramki, co pozwala na precyzyjną kontrolę nad prądem pomiędzy stałym źródłem a obszarami drenu.

Tranzystory MOSFET są integralnymi komponentami w różnych zastosowaniach, od mikroprocesorów w smartfonach i laptopach po systemy zarządzania energią w pojazdach elektrycznych. Ich zdolność do skutecznego kontrolowania prądu przy minimalnych stratach mocy czyni je niezbędnymi w rozwoju technologii w różnych sektorach.

The MOSFET is a semiconductor device that controls electrical current in modern electronics. It is also called an IGFET or MISFET. The three main terminals are the source, drain, and gate.

MOSFETs are classified as n-channel or p-channel devices. The type depends on the doping of the substrate and the source or drain regions. In an n-MOSFET, the source and drain are n-type regions separated from a p-type substrate by reverse-biased p-n diodes.

The gate is built from a metal plate over an oxide layer, along with the ohmic contact on the substrate. These parts make up the four terminals of the MOSFET. When no voltage is applied to the gate, an n-MOSFET stays off. Only a very small leakage current can flow from source to drain.

A positive gate bias creates an n-channel in an n-MOSFET. This allows a large current to flow between the source and drain. The channel conductance can be adjusted by changing the gate voltage. That control makes MOSFETs useful in smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicle power systems, where efficient current control with low power loss is important.
