Dimensional analysis helps organize experimental data and test physical relationships. It can simplify a complex problem and point to the key dimensionless groups that matter. But it does not give a full solution by itself.

Experimental data is needed to find the exact relationship and to check theoretical predictions. In the example of a spherical particle moving through a viscous fluid, dimensional analysis shows that drag force depends on the particle’s diameter, velocity, and the fluid’s viscosity. These variables are then grouped into dimensionless terms.

Researchers measure drag force while changing velocity to compare the dimensionless groups, such as the Reynolds number. This makes it possible to correlate the data and express the drag-velocity relationship as a constant. Multiple tests are used to confirm that constant and verify that drag depends on velocity.

When drag depends only on diameter, velocity, and viscosity, the result should apply to any spherical particle in any fluid under the same conditions. Tests with different particles and fluids can check that this relationship is universal. That reduces the need for more experiments because the derived constant stays valid within those conditions.
