Helmet Impact Testing

Helmet impact testing is the controlled evaluation of a helmet’s ability to reduce harmful forces transmitted to the head during an impact. In a typical test, an instrumented headform wearing the helmet strikes a defined surface or receives a controlled blow, while sensors measure acceleration, force, and related motion as the helmet liner deforms and absorbs energy. Bioengineers use these measurements to assess impact attenuation, compare materials and designs, and identify conditions associated with elevated injury risk. The results support protective-equipment standards, guide helmet development, and improve strategies for reducing traumatic brain injury in sports, transportation, and occupational settings.
