Hydroxyapatite Targeted Probe

A hydroxyapatite targeted probe is a diagnostic or therapeutic construct designed to recognize hydroxyapatite, the calcium phosphate mineral that forms the inorganic component of bone and teeth. Targeting occurs when a probe’s binding group, peptide, antibody, or other ligand interacts with hydroxyapatite crystals, concentrating an attached imaging signal or therapeutic payload at mineralized tissue. In bioengineering, these probes support bone and dental research by enabling the visualization of mineral deposition, assessment of biomaterial integration, and localization of skeletal lesions or remodeling sites. Their selective accumulation can improve tissue characterization and guide the design of targeted imaging systems, regenerative scaffolds, and mineral-responsive treatments.

We describe an efficient method to separate single-stranded DNA, double-stranded DNA and RNA molecules from environmental viral communities. Nucleic acids are fractionated using hydroxyapatite chromatography with increasing concentrations of phosphate-containing buffers. This method permits the isolation of all viral nucleic acid types from environmental samples.
