Nitrogen Hydrogen Mixture

A nitrogen-hydrogen mixture is a controlled gas blend containing nitrogen and hydrogen in defined proportions, used to establish a reproducible gaseous environment for biological or analytical processes. Its behavior depends on component ratio, total pressure, temperature, and interactions with surrounding gases; nitrogen commonly serves as a relatively unreactive diluent, while hydrogen can alter redox conditions and gas-phase composition. In bioengineering, controlling this mixture can support anaerobic or low-oxygen cultivation, influence microbial metabolism, and improve reproducibility in bioreactors and gas-based assays. Careful monitoring is essential because changing composition changes cellular conditions, and hydrogen requires appropriate safety controls.

Nitrogen is an effective supercritical fluid for extraction or drying processes due to its small molecular size, high density in the near-liquid supercritical regime, and chemical inertness. We present a supercritical nitrogen drying protocol for the purification treatment of reactive, porous materials.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Zhiwei Chen, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment will demonstrate the hydrogenation of chalcone as an example of an alkene hydrogenation reaction (Figure 1). In this experiment, palladium on carbon (Pd/C) will be used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the process. A balloon will be used to supply the hydrogen atmosphere. The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

Mixtures of Acids

The pH of a solution containing an acid can be determined using its acid dissociation constant and its initial concentration. If a solution contains two different acids, then its pH can be determined using one of several methods depending upon the relative strength of the acids and their dissociation constants. A Mixture of a Strong Acid and a Weak Acid In a mixture of a strong acid and a weak acid, the strong acid dissociates completely and becomes a source of almost all the hydronium ions...
