Zeolitic Imidazole Framework

A zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) is a porous crystalline metal-organic framework assembled from metal ions or clusters linked by imidazolate-derived ligands, producing molecularly defined architectures with tunable pore environments. Its zeolite-like structure forms through coordination bonds, while the choice of metal and ligand controls pore size, chemical stability, surface functionality, and selective adsorption of gases or biomolecules. In bioengineering, ZIFs can encapsulate proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, and therapeutic compounds, protecting fragile cargo and regulating its release. These properties support biosensors, drug-delivery systems, biocatalysis, and biomolecule stabilization, while biocompatibility and controlled degradation remain important design considerations.
