Flow Rate Parameters

Flow rate parameters describe how quickly a fluid moves through a system and provide essential information for controlling transport, mixing, and delivery in biological techniques. They are determined by variables such as fluid volume, elapsed time, pressure, resistance, channel dimensions, and viscosity, which together influence whether flow remains steady, pulses, or becomes turbulent. In laboratory and biomedical settings, monitoring and adjusting flow rates supports reliable liquid handling, perfusion, filtration, chromatography, microfluidic processing, and sample preparation. Accurate control improves reproducibility, protects sensitive cells or biomolecules from excessive shear, and helps researchers maintain consistent experimental conditions.

2023

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the calibration of a flow passage as a flowmeter using a control volume (CV) formulation [1, 2]. The CV analysis focuses on the macroscopic effect of flow on engineering systems, rather than the detailed description that could be achieved with a detailed differential analysis. These two techniques should be...

Renal Drug Excretion: Effect of Urine pH, Flow Rate, and Drug pKa

2025

The pH of urine, the drug's pKa, and the urine flow rate are vital parameters for drug reabsorption and excretion. Urinary pH varies between 4.6 and 8.0 and is influenced by diet, drug intake, and the patient's pathophysiology. It affects a drug's ionization state and reabsorption. For instance, carbohydrate-rich food produces alkaline urine promoting drug excretion, while proteins and certain medications like ascorbic acid lead to acidic urine enhancing reabsorption. The pKa of a drug,...
