Animal Motion

Animal motion is the study of how animals move through their environments, a fundamental biological function that supports feeding, escape, reproduction, and migration. Movement occurs when nervous-system signals coordinate muscles with skeletal structures or hydrostatic support, generating forces that interact with the ground, water, or air; body shape and environmental conditions influence the resulting speed, stability, and efficiency. Comparative analysis of walking, swimming, flying, and burrowing reveals how anatomy and behavior reflect evolutionary adaptations. In biology, studying animal motion helps explain locomotion, energy use, habitat use, and survival, while also informing biomechanics, conservation research, and the design of bioinspired robots.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University One thing becomes very salient after basic exposure to the science of visual perception and sensation: what people see is a creation of the brain. As a result people may fail to see things, see things that are not there, or see things in a distorted way. To distinguish between physical reality and what people perceive, scientists use the term awareness to refer to what people perceive. To study awareness, vision scientists often...

Animal Diversity - Concepts

Kingdom Animalia is composed of a range of organisms united by a set of common characteristics. Barring a few exceptions, animals are multicellular eukaryotes that move, consume organic matter, and reproduce sexually. Although these attributes are shared, species within this kingdom are also extremely diverse. This diversity is due to adaptation of each species to a different niche. The niche of a species includes the area, function, and interrelationship of that species with other biotic and...

Kinematics and Projectile Motion

Source: Ketron Mitchell-Wynne, PhD, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA This experiment demonstrates the kinematics of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions. This lab will begin by studying motion in 1 dimension, under constant acceleration, by launching a projectile directly upward and measuring the maximum height reached. This lab will verify that the maximum height reached is consistent with the kinematic...
