Energy Transformation

Energy transformation is the conversion of energy from one form to another, a fundamental process that enables organisms to grow, move, reproduce, and maintain cellular organization. In biology, cells transform light energy into chemical energy during photosynthesis, then release usable energy from molecules such as glucose through cellular respiration, capturing part of it in ATP. Enzymes regulate these reactions through linked metabolic pathways, while energy transfers often involve redox reactions and electron carriers. Understanding energy transformation explains how plants support food webs, how cells power essential functions, and how disruptions in metabolism can affect health and ecosystems.

Energy Losses in Transformers

In an ideal transformer, it is assumed that there are no energy losses, and, hence, all the power at the primary winding is transferred to the secondary winding. However, in reality, the transformers always have some energy losses, and, hence, the output power obtained at the secondary winding is less than the input power at the primary winding due to energy losses. There are four main reasons for energy losses in transformers. The first cause can be the high resistance of the copper windings...

What is Energy?

The universe is composed of matter in different forms, and all forms of matter contain energy. The different forms of energy on Earth originate from the Sun — the ultimate energy source. Plants capture light energy from the Sun, and, via the process of photosynthesis, convert it into chemical energy. This stored energy from plants can be harnessed in many ways. For example, eating plant products as food provides energy for our body to function, and burning wood or coal (fossilized plants)...

The Food Chain Energy is one of the most important abiotic factors in an ecosystem and organisms in an ecosystem are connected by the flow of energy and matter among one another. Since energy can be neither created nor destroyed, it can only change form or be transferred to the next organism in a food chain. For example, every time a cow grazes on grass or an osprey hunts and consumes fish, energy is transferred from the consumed organism to the consumer. Each of these interactions in a food...

Chemical reactions, such as those that occur when you light a match, involve changes in energy as well as matter. Chemical changes and their accompanying changes in energy are important parts of everyday life. The macronutrients in food undergo metabolic reactions that provide the energy to keep bodies functioning. A variety of fuels (gasoline, natural gas, coal) is burned to produce energy for transportation, heating, and the generation of electricity. Industrial chemical reactions use...

Internal Energy

The total of all possible kinds of energy present in a substance is called the internal energy (U), sometimes symbolized as E. Suppose a system with initial internal energy, Uinitial, undergoes a change in energy (transfer of work or heat), and the final internal energy of the system is Ufinal. Change in internal energy equals the difference between Ufinal and Uinitial. Although the values for Ufinal and Uinitial cannot be determined for a system, the first law of thermodynamics only...
