Infectious Virus Titer

Infectious virus titer is a quantitative measure of the infectious virus particles present in a sample, indicating how effectively it can initiate infection in susceptible cells. It is determined by exposing cultured cells to serial virus dilutions and measuring productive infection, commonly through plaque formation or the dilution that infects 50% of cultures (TCID50). Unlike measurements of total viral material, infectious titer reflects functional infectivity and supports comparisons among virus preparations. In biology, it is used to standardize experimental doses, evaluate viral replication, assess antiviral treatments, and produce consistent vaccines, viral vectors, and other research reagents.
