Hairy Nanocrystalline Cellulose

Hairy nanocrystalline cellulose is a cellulose-based nanomaterial with a rigid crystalline core and flexible cellulose chains extending from its surface, giving the particles a distinctive interfacial structure. It forms when chemical processing removes much of the amorphous cellulose while preserving crystalline regions and retaining surface chains; these chains create a steric layer that influences hydration, aggregation, and colloidal stability. In chemistry, hairy nanocrystalline cellulose provides a tunable platform for studying polymer interfaces, suspension behavior, and nanoscale self-assembly. Its surface architecture can improve dispersion and compatibility in composites, coatings, and functional materials while enabling control over rheology and particle interactions.

Source: Sina Shahbazmohamadi and Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti-Roodposhti, School of Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT Alloys with grain size less than 100 nm are known as nanocrystaline alloys. Due to their enhanced physical and mechanical properties, there is an ever-increasing demand to employ them in various industries such as semiconductor, biosensors and aerospace. To improve the processing and application of nanocrystalline alloys, it is necessary to develop close to 100%...

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...

Preparation of Bacterial Nanocellulose Pellicles from Cellulose-Producing Bacteria

Source: Arias, S. L., et al. Fabrication of a Functionalized Magnetic Bacterial Nanocellulose with Iron Oxide Nanoparticles. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates the production of nanocellulose by culturing cellulose-producing bacteria in a nutrient medium containing mannitol. The bacteria metabolize mannitol into glucose, which is then polymerized and extruded as glucan chains that crystallize into cellulose sheets, forming a three-dimensional matrix at the air–liquid interface. The...

2014

We present a novel method of manufacturing rigid and robust short natural fiber preforms using a papermaking process. Bacterial cellulose acts simultaneously as the binder for the loose fibers and provides rigidity to the fiber preforms. These preforms can be infused with a resin to produce truly green hierarchical composites.
