Nmr Peak Broadening

NMR peak broadening is the appearance of wider-than-expected resonance lines in a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, often signaling reduced resolution or changes in molecular behavior. Broad lines arise when transverse magnetization loses phase coherence rapidly, producing a short T2 relaxation time; chemical exchange, molecular motion, paramagnetic species, sample heterogeneity, and magnetic-field inhomogeneity can contribute. In chemistry, analyzing peak width helps diagnose aggregation, conformational exchange, impurities, viscosity, and instrument shimming, while temperature- or concentration-dependent measurements can distinguish these causes. Controlling broadening improves spectral resolution and supports more reliable assignments, structure determination, and studies of molecular dynamics.

IR Spectrum Peak Broadening: Hydrogen Bonding

2024

The vibrational frequency of a bond is directly proportional to its bond strength. As a result, stronger bonds vibrate at higher frequencies, while weaker bonds vibrate at lower frequencies. The stretching vibration of the strong O–H bond in alcohols and phenols (very dilute solution or gas phase) appears as a sharp peak at 3600–3650 cm−1. However, the extent of hydrogen bonding influences the observed stretching frequency and band broadening. Intermolecular or intramolecular hydrogen bonding...

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Henrik Sundén – Chalmers University of Technology Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a vital analysis technique for organic chemists. With the help of NMR, the work in the organic lab has been facilitated tremendously. Not only can it provide information about the structure of a molecule but also determine the content and purity of a sample. Compared with other commonly encountered techniques for organic chemists — such as thermal analysis and mass...

The production of hyperpolarized xenon by means of spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) is described. This method yields a ~10000-fold enhancement of the nuclear spin polarization of Xe-129 and has applications in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging. Examples of gas phase and solution state experiments are given.
