Packing Efficiency

Packing efficiency is the fraction of space occupied by particles in a solid arrangement, making it a key concept for understanding crystal structure, density, and material properties in chemistry. It depends on how atoms, ions, or molecules pack within a repeating unit cell: close-packed arrangements minimize empty space, while particle size, geometry, coordination number, and interstitial voids determine the occupied volume. Comparing packing efficiencies helps explain why different crystal lattices have distinct densities and stability, and it supports calculations involving unit-cell dimensions and particle volume. This concept is also important in interpreting ionic solids, metallic structures, phase behavior, and the design of materials with tailored physical properties.

Single and Two-phase Flow in a Packed Bed Reactor

2023

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA The goal of this experiment is to determine the magnitude of maldistribution in typical packed bed reactors in both single phase and two-phase (gas-liquid) flow and evaluate the effects of this maldistribution on pressure drop. The concepts of residence time distribution and dispersion are introduced through the use of tracers, and these concepts are related to physical...

Efficiency of Liquid-liquid Extraction

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a separation technique used instead of distillation when either: (a) the relative volatilities of the compounds to be separated are very similar; (b) one or more of the mixture components are temperature sensitive even near ambient conditions; (c) the distillation would require a very low pressure or a very high distillate/feed...

Output Efficiency: Achieving Output Efficiency

2025

Output efficiency happens when resources are used in a way that balances what people want with how goods are produced. This means the marginal rate of substitution (MRS) matches the marginal rate of transformation (MRT). When this balance is reached, the economy makes the most of its resources without waste.Take the example of bread and milk. If consumers are happy to trade 2 loaves of bread for 1 liter of milk, the MRS is 2. But if producers only need to give up 1 loaf of bread to produce 1...

Improved Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Double Casting via Silicone Oil Treatment for Densely Packed Microstructure Replication

2025

This protocol presents an improved demolding procedure for the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double casting technique by introducing silicone oil as a non-adhesive barrier between PDMS layers. Unlike plasma or chemical surface modification methods, this approach requires no specialized or costly equipment, making it a more accessible and cost-effective alternative.
