Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer produced by joining propene molecules into long, carbon-based chains, making it an important material in chemistry and manufacturing. In an addition polymerization reaction, catalysts link the alkene monomers without releasing small molecules, while the arrangement of pendant methyl groups, or tacticity, influences crystallinity, strength, and flexibility. Polypropylene’s low density, chemical resistance, and heat tolerance support applications in packaging, laboratory equipment, automotive components, textiles, and medical products. Studying its molecular structure, processing behavior, and recycling pathways helps chemists tailor performance and address the environmental challenges associated with widely used plastics.
