Pore Volume Analysis

Pore volume analysis is the measurement of the empty space within a porous solid, a key property for understanding how materials store and transport gases, liquids, and dissolved substances. In chemistry, the analysis commonly uses gas adsorption and desorption data: an adsorbate fills pores under controlled pressure, and the resulting isotherm is interpreted to estimate total pore volume and pore-size distribution. These measurements help characterize catalysts, adsorbents, membranes, soils, and other porous materials, linking pore structure to surface accessibility, diffusion, reaction efficiency, and separation performance. Pore volume analysis therefore supports material design, quality control, and evaluation of changes caused by processing or chemical treatment.

Segmentation of three-dimensional data from many imaging techniques is a major bottleneck in analysis of complex biological systems. Here, we describe the use of SuRVoS Workbench to semi-automatically segment volumetric data at various length-scales using example datasets from cryo-electron tomography, cryo soft X-ray tomography, and phase contrast X-ray tomography techniques.

Pore Size Distribution

2024

In concrete, the pore size distribution significantly influences the material's properties. Capillary pores, markedly larger than gel pores, form a vast network within partially hydrated cement paste, reducing the concrete's strength and increasing its permeability. This heightened permeability leads to a greater risk of damage from environmental factors like freeze-thaw cycles and chemical attacks, with the extent of vulnerability also being tied to the water-to-cement ratio. Adequate...

In this video, we will demonstrate modification techniques for porous metallic implants to improve their functionality and to control cell migration. Techniques include development of pore gradients to control cell movement in 3D and production of basement membrane mimics to control cell movement in 2-D. Also, a HPLC-based method for monitoring implant integration in-vivo via analysis of blood proteins is described.
