Thiosulfate

Thiosulfate is a sulfur oxyanion with the formula S₂O₃²⁻, and its salts are important in analytical, inorganic, and environmental chemistry. Structurally related to sulfate, it contains a central sulfur atom bonded to three oxygen atoms and a terminal sulfur atom; in redox reactions, thiosulfate can reduce iodine to iodide while being oxidized to tetrathionate. This predictable reaction supports iodometric titrations for measuring oxidizing agents, including dissolved oxygen and chlorine. Thiosulfate compounds also serve as photographic fixing agents and dechlorination chemicals, making their sulfur transfer and redox behavior relevant to laboratory analysis and water treatment.

Source: Smaa Koraym at Johns Hopkins University, MD, USA Concentration DependenceExpand In this experiment, you will combine varying concentrations of aqueous HCl and sodium thiosulfate to make solid sulfur, which rapidly gathers into opaque yellow particles at a certain sulfur concentration. Since the reaction solution starts clear and colorless, you can easily tell when it reaches that concentration. You'll use the same test tube and total volume each time, so it will take the same amount...

Please adjust quantities as needed. Put on a lab coat, splash-proof safety glasses, and nitrile gloves. Obtain a waste container for aqueous sodium thiosulfate in advance. Note: HCl is toxic and highly corrosive, and sodium thiosulfate is an irritant, so the solutions for this lab must be prepared in a...

Dissolved Oxygen in Surface Water

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Dissolved oxygen (DO) measurements calculate the amount of gaseous oxygen dissolved in surface water, which is important to all oxygen-breathing life in river ecosystems, including fish species preferred for human consumption (e.g. bluegill and bass), as well as decomposer species critical to the recycling of biogeochemical materials in the system. The oxygen dissolved in lakes, rivers, and oceans is crucial for the...

(2016)This video demonstrates a culture-based method for identifying Vibrio species, highlighting chromogenic agar as a more accurate alternative to the commonly used thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose or TCBS agar. Chromogenic agar provides superior differentiation of Vibrio strains by detecting species-specific...
