Urine Drug Testing

Urine drug testing is an analytical method that detects drugs and their metabolites in urine to assess recent substance exposure. In chemistry-based testing, immunoassays first identify target compounds through selective antibody binding, while confirmatory methods such as gas or liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry separate and characterize analytes according to their chemical properties and mass-to-charge ratios. These tests support clinical monitoring, workplace and forensic investigations, and substance-use research, although results depend on factors including metabolism, detection windows, specimen integrity, and assay specificity. Careful interpretation helps distinguish screening findings from analytically confirmed results.

Renal Drug Excretion: Effect of Urine pH, Flow Rate, and Drug pKa

2025

The pH of urine, the drug's pKa, and the urine flow rate are vital parameters for drug reabsorption and excretion. Urinary pH varies between 4.6 and 8.0 and is influenced by diet, drug intake, and the patient's pathophysiology. It affects a drug's ionization state and reabsorption. For instance, carbohydrate-rich food produces alkaline urine promoting drug excretion, while proteins and certain medications like ascorbic acid lead to acidic urine enhancing reabsorption. The pKa of a drug,...

Filtration and Urine Formation

The function of the kidneys is to filter, reabsorb, secrete, and excrete. Every day the kidneys filter nearly 180 liters of blood, initially removing water and solutes but ultimately returning nearly all filtrates into circulation with the help of osmoregulatory hormones. This process removes wastes and toxins but is also crucial to maintain water and electrolyte levels. Most of these functions are performed by the tiny but numerous nephrons contained within the kidneys. Blood enters the renal...

A urine culture and sensitivity test is a diagnostic procedure used to identify urinary tract bacterial infections and determine the most effective antibiotics for treatment. This test is generally preferred when a patient shows manifestations of a urinary tract infection, such as frequent or painful urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or lower abdominal pain.Purpose of the TestThe primary goals of a urine culture and sensitivity test are to:Determine the specific bacteria causing the...
