Catheter Urinary Tract Infection

Catheter urinary tract infection is an infection of the urinary system associated with an indwelling urinary catheter, making it an important complication of hospital care. Microorganisms can enter along the catheter surface or through the drainage system, attach to catheter materials, and form biofilms that protect them from host defenses and antimicrobial treatment. Clinicians use appropriate catheter insertion, closed drainage, hygiene, prompt removal, and monitoring for symptoms or laboratory evidence to reduce risk. Understanding catheter-associated infection supports safer urinary management, guides diagnosis and treatment, and helps limit complications such as bloodstream infection and antimicrobial resistance.

In this video, we describe the technique for the intravesical administration of uropathogenic bacteria to generate a urinary tract infection model in mice. This model can be used to understand the spread of uropathogenic bacterial infection within the urinary system and the mechanisms that determine UTI susceptibility.

This protocol details an in vitro model of the catheterized urinary tract, which can be used to study both planktonic and biofilm-associated bacterial cell populations in simulated catheter-associated urinary tract infections. This model can be further utilized to study the efficacy of antimicrobial products aimed at controlling urinary tract infections.
