Jugular Venous Pressure

Jugular venous pressure (JVP) is a bedside estimate of right atrial pressure obtained from the internal jugular venous pulsation, providing a noninvasive window into central venous pressure and cardiac function. As pressure in the right atrium changes, it is transmitted through the superior vena cava to the jugular veins; clinicians assess the venous waveform and its vertical height above the sternal angle with the patient appropriately reclined. JVP assessment helps evaluate intravascular volume and right-sided heart function, supporting recognition of conditions such as heart failure, cardiac tamponade, and constrictive pericarditis.

2023

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Central venous access is necessary in a multitude of clinical situations, including vascular access, vasopressor and caustic medication delivery, central venous pressure monitoring, intravascular device delivery (pacing wires, Swann-Ganz catheters), volume resuscitation, total parental nutrition, hemodialysis, and frequent phlebotomy. Safe reliable placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) in...

We describe a method for creating a reliable model of cerebral venous hypertension in the adult mouse. This model has been widely described and tested in the rat. This new counterpart in the mice opens the possibility of using genetic modified animals and thereby broadens the applications of the model.

Jugular Vein Graft Harvest From a Rabbit Model: A Surgical Procedure to Excise a Segment of Rabbit Jugular Vein for Ex Vivo Studies

In this video, we demonstrate a procedure for surgically harvesting a segment of the jugular vein from a rabbit model. The resected segment can be used as an autologous vein graft to study intimal hyperplasia that develops due to arterial blood pressure.

Carotid Artery and Jugular Vein Interposition: A Technique to Induce Venous Intimal Hyperplasia in Rabbit Model

This video demonstrates the interposition of the rabbit carotid artery with the jugular vein to induce venous intimal hyperplasia by subjecting the veins to arterial pressure. This model will help investigate molecular and genetic interventions to attenuate the progression of intimal hyperplasia after revascularization surgeries.

Seldinger Technique Based Pulmonary Artery Catheterization: A Procedure to Insert Pulmonary Artery Catheter Through the Jugular Vein in a Porcine Model
