Osteoarthritis Hand

Hand osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disorder that affects cartilage and surrounding tissues in the finger and thumb joints, often causing pain and loss of hand function. Progressive cartilage breakdown alters load distribution, while subchondral bone remodeling, osteophyte formation, and episodic synovial inflammation can produce stiffness, swelling, and reduced grip or pinch strength. Clinically, assessment combines symptom history, physical examination, and, when indicated, radiographs to distinguish osteoarthritis from inflammatory arthritis and guide care. Treatment focuses on preserving hand function through education, therapeutic exercise, activity modification, splinting, and symptom-relief strategies, with injections or surgery considered for selected cases.

We describe a protocol for the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) model in mice, an effective tool for osteoarthritis (OA) research. In addition, we have demonstrated that deficiency of progranulincan exaggerate OA development and progression by using this model, indicating that progranulin plays a protective role in the pathogenesis of OA.

Osteoarthritis (OA), or degenerative joint disease, is a debilitating condition associated with pain that remains only partially controlled by available analgesics. Animal models are being developed to improve our understanding of OA-related pain mechanisms. Here we describe the methodology for the monoiodoacetate model of OA pain in the mouse.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Reaching for objects, walking without hitting obstacles, landing on a chair as you sit (instead of falling to the floor), these and all our physical actions depend on an ability to perceive our own bodies in space, to know where our limbs are relative to one another and relative to the rest of the world. One way that the human brain encodes this information is called proprioception, the brain relies on its own control and feedback...

Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Surgical asepsis, or the sterile technique, refers to practices that render and keep objects and areas free of microorganisms. Hand washing...
