Stool Sample

A stool sample is a specimen of fecal material collected for laboratory examination, providing noninvasive information about gastrointestinal health and disease. After collection in a clean container, laboratories may use microscopy, culture, antigen or molecular tests, and chemical assays to detect pathogens, parasites, blood, inflammation, or altered digestive function. In clinical practice, stool samples support the diagnosis of infections, gastrointestinal bleeding, malabsorption, and inflammatory bowel conditions, while serial testing can help monitor treatment or disease progression. Proper collection, storage, and transport are essential because contamination, delay, or unsuitable conditions can affect test accuracy.

Gastrointestinal (GI) diagnostic studies are pivotal in confirming, ruling out, diagnosing, or staging various diseases, including cancers. Following diagnosis, allocating time for discussions with the patient and providing informational resources is crucial. Diagnostic assessments of the GI tract often occur in outpatient settings like endoscopy suites or GI labs. Preparation for these tests may include dietary restrictions, fasting, liquid bowel preparations, laxatives, enemas, and the...
