Conflict Risk Perception

Conflict risk perception is the way individuals and organizations judge the likelihood, causes, and potential consequences of disputes in engineering projects. It develops as stakeholders interpret uncertainty, competing objectives, resource constraints, technical decisions, and communication patterns through their knowledge and prior experience. Engineers can assess these perceptions using stakeholder analysis, interviews, surveys, and risk-rating frameworks, then compare differing views to identify emerging tensions. Applying this insight to project planning, infrastructure development, and safety management supports earlier communication, clearer decision-making, and targeted mitigation, helping teams address social and organizational factors that can influence technical performance and project outcomes.

Perspectives on Sensation and Perception

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University The study of sensation—how signals are transduced from sensory organs, like the eyes—and perception—how the brain interprets these messages—has a rich history dating back to the 19th century, when great strides were made in understanding the properties of light and how they relate to the visual system. Importantly, such sensory and perceptual processes determine what we see, feel, taste, and hear in our surroundings. However, many...

Subliminal Perception

2024

Subliminal perception refers to the processing of sensory information that occurs below the level of conscious awareness. Researchers study subliminal perception by presenting a stimulus, such as a word or image, very quickly, typically around 50 milliseconds. This rapid presentation is often followed by another stimulus, such as a pattern of dots or lines, which blocks further mental processing of the initial stimulus. As a result, if participants cannot identify the initial stimulus better...

Factors Affecting Perception

Perception is influenced by perceptual set, context, motivation, and emotion. Perceptual set, or perceptual expectancy, refers to the tendency to perceive things in a particular way, influenced by previous experiences and expectations. This phenomenon affects the interpretation of stimuli, creating a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that impact sensory perceptions of sound, taste, touch, and sight. An illustrative example of a perceptual set is the scenario where an airline pilot told...

Gestalt Principles of Perception

Gestalt principles provide a framework for understanding how humans perceive objects as unified wholes within their context. These principles are essential in explaining the cognitive processes that make sense of complex visual stimuli by organizing them into coherent groups. One fundamental principle is proximity, which posits that objects located close to each other are perceived as a collective group. For instance, when dots are positioned near one another, the visual system interprets them...

Power and Conflicts in Channels

2024

Power and conflicts in distribution channels are integral aspects of the relationship dynamics between manufacturers, intermediaries, and retailers involved in bringing a product to the end consumer. Power in this context refers to the ability of one channel member to influence another in ways that serve its interests. Manufacturers typically hold power through their control over production, brand reputation, and the availability of desirable products. However, conflicts may arise when...
