Fluid Interface

A fluid interface is the boundary between two fluids, commonly immiscible liquids or a liquid and gas, where differences in composition and molecular interactions produce distinct physical behavior. Interfacial tension arises from unbalanced molecular forces at this boundary, while pressure, viscous, and gravitational forces determine its shape, motion, and stability; contact angle describes how the interface wets a solid surface. In engineering, fluid interfaces govern droplets, bubbles, emulsions, thin films, and multiphase flows. Understanding these interactions supports the design of microfluidic devices, coatings, heat-transfer systems, separators, and chemical-processing equipment, while helping predict transport, mixing, and flow performance.

Protein-protein Interfaces

2020

Many proteins form complexes to carry out their functions, making protein-protein interactions (PPIs) essential for an organism's survival. Most PPIs are stabilized by numerous weak noncovalent chemical forces. The physical shape of the interfaces determines the way two proteins interact. Many globular proteins have closely-matching shapes on their surfaces, which form a large number of weak bonds. Additionally, many PPIs occur between two helices or between a surface cleft and a polypeptide...

2017

A method for the drying-induced self-integration of megamolecular biopolymers on the air-liquid crystalline interface is provided here. This methodology will be useful not only for understanding the macroscopic potentials of biopolymers, but also as an evaluation method for soft materials in biomedical and environmental fields.

Spatial Measurement of Tumor Interstitial Fluid Pressure: A Method to Measure the Interstitial Fluid Pressure

This article describes a biofabrication approach: deposition of stimuli-responsive polysaccharides in the presence of biased electrodes to create biocompatible films which can be functionalized with cells or proteins. We demonstrate a bench-top strategy for the generation of the films as well as their basic uses for creating interactive biofunctionalized surfaces for lab-on-a-chip applications.
