Functionally Graded Ceramics

Functionally graded ceramics are engineered ceramic materials whose composition, microstructure, or porosity changes gradually across a component to provide location-specific properties. This gradient is created by varying material constituents or processing conditions during fabrication, reducing abrupt interfaces and distributing stresses, thermal expansion, hardness, or toughness more effectively than a uniform ceramic. In engineering, functionally graded ceramics can combine a wear-resistant surface with a tougher interior, or a heat-resistant layer with a compatible structural substrate, improving performance in thermal barriers, cutting tools, biomedical implants, and energy systems. Their design supports lightweight, durable components that withstand demanding mechanical and thermal environments.
