Impact Dynamics

Impact dynamics is the study of how bodies interact during short-duration collisions, including the forces, energy transfer, deformation, and motion that result. When an impact occurs, momentum changes rapidly as contact forces develop between surfaces, while kinetic energy is distributed through elastic deformation, plastic deformation, fracture, heat, and sound. Engineers use impact dynamics to evaluate crashworthiness, protective structures, material performance, and the reliability of mechanical systems exposed to sudden loads. Analysis may combine experimental testing, high-speed measurements, and computational models to predict peak forces, stress waves, damage, and rebound, supporting safer designs and improved impact-resistant materials.

2014

Drop impact of non-Newtonian fluids is a complex process since different physical parameters influence the dynamics over a very short time (less than one tenth of a millisecond). A fast imaging technique is introduced in order to characterize the impact behaviors of different non-Newtonian fluids.

Impact occurs when two bodies collide, leading to the application of impulsive forces between them. Analyzing impact mechanics involves considering two colliding particles moving along a line known as the line of impact, which passes through their centers and is perpendicular to the contact plane. When particles with different initial velocities collide, they induce deformation by applying equal and opposite impulses. At the point of maximum deformation, the particles move together with...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA It is rare nowadays that a whole year goes by without a major earthquake event wreaking havoc somewhere around the world. In some cases, like the 2005 Banda Ache earthquake in Indonesia, the damage involved large geographic areas and casualties in the six figures. In general, the number and intensity of earthquakes is not increasing, however, the vulnerability of the built environment is...
