Online Signal Processing

Online signal processing is the real-time analysis and transformation of signals as data arrives, allowing engineering systems to respond without waiting for complete data records. Algorithms process incoming samples sequentially, often updating estimates, filters, or model parameters continuously under constraints such as limited memory, computational resources, and low latency. This approach supports adaptive filtering, noise reduction, event detection, and feedback control in applications including communications, industrial monitoring, robotics, and sensor networks. By operating continuously, online signal processing enables systems to track changing conditions, make timely decisions, and maintain performance in dynamic environments.

Attention control comprises enhancement of target signals and attenuation of distractor signals. We describe an approach to measure separately but concurrently, the neurophysiology of attending and ignoring in sustained intermodal attention, utilizing a passive control condition during which neither process is continuously engaged.
