Optical Plasma Generation

Optical plasma generation is the creation of ionized, electrically conductive matter using concentrated light, typically from a high-intensity laser, and is important for controlling energy, light, and matter in engineering systems. When a laser pulse is focused into a gas, liquid, or solid, multiphoton ionization and subsequent electron collisions can trigger an avalanche of free electrons, producing a plasma whose temperature, density, and lifetime depend on laser intensity and material conditions. This process supports laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, precision materials processing, plasma sources, and advanced light generation. Studying optical plasma generation also improves control of laser energy deposition and enables new photonic and manufacturing technologies.

Large laser-interferometers are being constructed to create a new type of astronomy based on gravitational waves. Their sensitivities, as for many other high-precision experiments, are approaching fundamental noise limits such as the atomic vibration of their components. We are pioneering technologies to overcome these limits using novel laser beam shapes.
