Pulsed Valve Expansion

Pulsed valve expansion is an engineering method that releases pressurized gas through a valve in short, controlled bursts, producing a transient flow rather than continuous discharge. When the valve opens, gas accelerates from a high-pressure reservoir into a lower-pressure region, while valve timing, pressure ratio, and chamber volume determine the pulse shape and expansion conditions. This process can generate rapid changes in pressure, temperature, density, and velocity, making it useful for studying unsteady fluid dynamics, testing pneumatic and propulsion components, and producing pulsed gas or molecular beams. Controlling the expansion improves repeatability, efficiency, and experimental precision.

2012

An experimental method to examine the early plasma evolution induced by ultrashort laser pulses is described. Using this method, high quality images of early plasma are obtained with high temporal and spatial resolutions. A novel integrated atomistic model is used to simulate and explain the mechanisms of early plasma.

When the heart pumps blood out, arterial elastic fibers play a crucial role in sustaining a high-pressure gradient. They expand to accommodate the received blood and then recoil - a process known as the pulse that can be either manually palpated or electronically quantified. Despite a reduction in its effect with increased distance from the heart, elements of the pulse's systolic and diastolic components persist, observable even at the arteriole level. The pulse serves as a clinical indicator...

The pulse is one of the most fundamental physiological indicators of the body's cardiovascular health. It is the rhythmic expansion and contraction of the arterial walls in response to the pressure generated by the heart's pumping action. Pulse Rate and its Significance Pulse rate, often measured in beats per minute (bpm), reflects the heart rate (HR), which is influenced by numerous factors such as stress, physical activity, and hormonal changes. A normal resting adult pulse rate falls between...

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Thermal expansion is extremely important when considering which materials will be used in systems that experience fluctuations in temperature. A high or low thermal expansion in a material may or may not be desirable, depending on the application. For instance, in a common liquid thermometer, a material with a high thermal expansion would be...

Protocol for Relative Hydrodynamic Assessment of Tri-leaflet Polymer Valves

2013

There has been renewed interest in developing polymer valves. Here, the objectives are to demonstrate the feasibility of modifying a commercial pulse duplicator to accommodate tri-leaflet geometries and to define a protocol to present polymer valve hydrodynamic data in comparison to native and prosthetic valve data collected under near-identical conditions.
