Conductivity Temperature Measurement

Conductivity temperature measurement is an environmental monitoring method that records a fluid’s ability to carry electrical current together with its temperature, two indicators of water chemistry and physical conditions. A conductivity probe applies a small electrical signal across electrodes, while a temperature sensor measures the sample temperature; because ionic conductivity varies with temperature, instruments compensate readings to a standard reference temperature. This combined measurement supports assessment of salinity, dissolved ions, mixing, and potential contamination in freshwater, groundwater, wastewater, and aquatic ecosystems. Accurate temperature compensation improves comparisons across sites and seasons, strengthening water-quality surveys and long-term environmental monitoring.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Dana Lashley - College of William and Mary Demonstration by: Matt Smith When new bonds are formed in the course of a chemical reaction, it requires that the involved species (atoms or molecules) come in very close proximity and collide into one another. The collisions between these species are more frequent and effective the higher the speed at which these molecules are moving. A widely used rule of thumb, which has its roots in the Arrhenius equation1, states that...

We describe a relatively rapid (30 min) and realistic method for simultaneously measurement of leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) and stomatal conductance (gs) for transpiring excised leaves. The method can be modified to measure the light and dehydration responses of Kleaf and gs.

A thermometer measures body temperature. The common sites for measuring body temperature are the oral cavity, axillary region, temporal artery, and skin surface, such as the forehead, abdomen, and axilla. True core body temperature is assessed in the rectum, tympanic membrane, pulmonary artery, esophagus, and urinary bladder. Oral: When assessing oral temperature, the thermometer tip should be placed under the tongue in the posterior sublingual pocket. It offers accurate readings and can be...

Body temperature can be assessed using various devices and measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit. Glass-bulb Thermometer: Glass-bulb thermometers are hollow glass tubes with a bulb tip containing liquid such as ethanol or mercury. Historically, glass bulb mercury thermometers were the standard device to measure body temperature. Today, mercury thermometers are prohibited in many countries due to the hazardous effects of mercury and the risk of exposure if the glass bulb breaks. In general,...
