Light Pollution

Light pollution is the excessive, misdirected, or poorly timed use of artificial light at night, altering natural darkness and making the night sky brighter. Light fixtures produce skyglow, glare, and light trespass when emitted light scatters through the atmosphere or reaches areas beyond its intended target, disrupting daily and seasonal light–dark cycles. In environmental research, light pollution is examined through measurements of nighttime brightness and changes in wildlife behavior, migration, reproduction, and habitat use. Reducing unnecessary illumination with shielding, lower intensity, warmer light, and adaptive timing can conserve energy, protect ecosystems, and preserve visibility of the night sky.

Source: Villela, H. D. M., et al. Prospecting Microbial Strains for Bioremediation and Probiotics Development for Metaorganism Research and Preservation. J. Vis. Exp. (2019).This video demonstrates the isolation of pollutant-degrading marine bacteria through serial dilution, colony selection, and growth in EE2-containing medium. By using EE2 as the sole carbon source, the protocol identifies bacterial strains capable of metabolizing this environmental pollutant.

The Efficient Level of Pollution

2025

The production of goods is essential for economic growth and societal development, but it often results in pollution as an unintended consequence. Completely eliminating pollution, while seemingly ideal, is impractical. This would mean stopping all production of vital goods and services. The real challenge is properly balancing the benefits of goods production against the resulting environmental damage. The Concept of Efficient Pollution The marginal social cost of pollution is the sum of...

Light as Energy

2019

The energy required to carry out photosynthesis is light— typically electromagnetic radiation from the sun. The range of all possible wavelengths is known as the electromagnetic spectrum. Photons A photon is a discrete electromagnetic particle or bundle of energy. Photons are characterized by their frequency, wavelength, and amplitude, similar to the properties of a wave. Waves with higher frequencies transmit more energy and have shorter wavelengths than longer wavelengths that transmit less...
